HomeMy Public PortalAbout01-31-1969 - Special Meeting %�� SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS & SAFETY OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND INDIANA, JANUARY 31, 1969 A Special Meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety was called for 9:00 a.m. , Friday, January 31, 1969. The meeting was held in the Traffic Department room of the new Municipal Building. Mr. Cecere, Mr. Hoskins and Mr. Jacobs were all present. Mr. Cecere announced that Robert L. Demps had resigned as assistant fire chief. He then read the following letter from Mr. Demps, dated January 30, 1969: Board of Public Works & Safety Mayor of the City of Richmond City Building Richmond, Indiana Gentlemen: As you are undoubtedly aware, I am the President of the Indiana Association of Firefighters, and as President, I am responsible for presenting the interests of the Association before the Indiana Legis- lature. Because of this duty, I have been employing my vacation time and kelly days to represent the Association. I am now convinced that I cannot serve the interest of the Assoc- iation and the Richmond Fire Department as Assistant Chief at the same time. I do believe that my services to the Association will benefit out City. However, in order to alleviate any possible con- flict of interests, I do hereby submit my resignation effective immediately, and respectfully request that I be ordered to a line company in accordance with my seniority. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to serve in the officer capa- city, and pledge to you my continued interest in upgrading the Richmond Fire Department and the continued growth of our City. Yours very/truly, /s/ Robert Demps Mr. Cecere stated that none of the members of the Board of Public Works and Safety knew that Mr. Demps was serving as a lobbyist for the Indiana Assoication of Firefighters or that he had been elected president of the state-wide organization. Mr. Cecere stated that Mr. Demps' duties as assistant fire chief were in conflict with his duties as president of the State Firefighters Association. When this was called to Mr. Demps' attention, he met with the Mayor and Members of the Board and Mr. Demps said he wanted to step down as Assistant Fire Chief in order to continue his work with the Indiana Association of Firefighters. Mr. Demps will continue to serve as a fireman. Mr. Hoskins praised Mr. Demps as a competent, dedicated firefighter, "He was active in the Fire Department training program; aided in hiring new personnel; and he helped prepare specifications for the three new pumpers and the proposed new Number 1 Fire Station. He has been coop- erative and helpful. It was announced that a new assistant fire chief will be appointed soon. Mr. Jacobs moved that the resignation of Mr. Demps be accepted, seconded by Mr. Hoskins and was approved by unanimous vote.
