The old supplier, Waste Management, will be picking up all trash and recycle containers within the next couple of weeks, and the new vendor, Waste Pro, will drop off new containers – the number of new containers left will be based on current billing records. Please follow the instructions that will be included with your new containers, which will direct you to leave your old containers curbside following your last pickup of the week of October 6th; your new containers will then be used starting the week of October 13th. If there are any discrepancies, or if you do not get your containers, please call WastePro Customer Service at (912) 965-0777 to make additional arrangements or corrections in your billing details. New Water/Sewer Rate Schedule At the October 23rd Meeting at 7PM in the City Hall Auditorium, City Council will consider these increases to the water and sewer rates to meet these goals: • Water conservation measures – State and federal governments are adding requirements on municipalities that include conservation measures such as tiered rates. The City is required to make withdrawal reductions to 2004 levels within 12-18 months or face potential fines. • Fiscal responsibility – The cost of water supplied and sewer treatment by the City currently exceeds charges paid by users of these services. The best way to make sure everyone is making their best efforts to conserve our fresh water resources is to make sure that everyone is paying their fair share for the water that they use. These new rates include tiered pricing for higher usage. This provides further encouragement to conserve. Previous billings were made on a bi-monthly basis. The new billing cycle is monthly, and all numbers have been adjusted for proper comparison here. Audit of existing water bills shows that over 67% of Tybee residences use 5,000 gallons or less monthly; due to base rate increases to cover the cost of infrastructure to deliver water to the home, there will be an increase in these bills to $36.95 monthly – senior bills will increase to $23.88 monthly. If your usage is over 5,000 gallons monthly, you will see higher increases, although by improving your conservation efforts, you may reduce your monthly bills. The new, automatic water meter reading systems recently installed will also allow City staff to help identify leaks which may be costing you money, as well as wasting this increasingly scarce resource! A Public Informational Session is scheduled during the meeting on October 23rd, and Council, staff and the engineering consultants will be available to answer your questions.
