HomeMy Public PortalAbout01.10.2023 CAC MinutesCitizen's Advisory Committee Minutes January 10, 2023 6:00 p.m. Council Chambers The Meeting of the Citizen's Advisory Committee was called to order at 6:00 p.m. Members present from left to right: Yvonne, Shanklin, Kristen Sallberg, Felton Barnes (late arrival), De'Carlo Garcia, Jennifer Sweeney, and Ryan Knox. 1. Called to Order This meeting was called to order by Committee member Garcia at 6:00 p.m. 2. Pledge of Allegiance The Pledge was recited by membership in attendance. 3. Approval of Agenda Mr. Garcia made a motion to approve the agenda, Mr. Knox approved the agenda and Ms. Sallberg seconded it. 4. The Manor's Minute Topics 4.1 Martin Luther King Jr. March- Mayor Whitten advised and implored the members to attend the march and spread the word that it is to take place Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. starting from the south end of Main St. to the Veteran's Memorial. 4.2 The Opioid Summit- The summit is scheduled Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Crestview Community Center. From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The quest speaker is CEO of Project Opioid---- Andrae Bailey. 4.3 Arbor Day- Last year it was decided that the City/Committee was going to adopt a tree. The mayor would like to dedicate this year's tree in honor of a former Crestview Citizen [ Joshua Kreiser] who was killed in a crosswalk by a vehicle in 2020. He would like to dedicate a tree in Twin Hill's Park and asks the Committee members for their input on whether there should be a ceremony, a plaque, or both. Open Discussion on Arbor Dav and Memorial for Joshua Krieser After deliberation the committee decided to hold a small ceremony and to invite the family of Mr. Kreiser. They have also decided to plant a tree and name the tree, this will be put in a database along with the layout of the park so other's will be able to look up this information online. Guest Speaker Shayne Betts with Okaloosa County Aging spoke on behalf of the organization that was founded in 1968. It is a not -for-profit organization that started with a group of people that wanted to do something for the seniors (60+), the disadvantage, and the disabled in Walton and Okaloosa County. They partner with Kim Fraley from Elder Services and Love Joy. The services that are aligned with them are: Meals on Wheels, meals delivered to homes, Alzheimer's Disease Initiative Program, Community Care for the Elderly, and the Older Americans at Contract. In Okaloosa County they have "Helping Hands" — which are staff that help senior citizens with non -medical care (i.e., shopping, home management, companionship, chores around the house, and transportation). Between Okaloosa and Walton County they have over 400 seniors and 70 employees (Hope Peddlers). They wish to partner with the community to open a "true" senior center to address the needs of seniors and find ways to partner with neighboring cities to apply for grants and assistance for the elderly. Closing Remarks Ryan Knox announced his resignation effective immediately for personal reasons.
