HomeMy Public PortalAbout06132023 Citizen Advisory Council MinutesCitizen's Advisory Committee Minutes June 13, 2023 6:00 p.m. The Citizen's Advisory Committee meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. Members present from left to right: Kristen Sallberg, Yvonne Shanklin, Roy Estes, De'Carlo Garcia, Ray Nelson, and Jennifer Sweeney. 1. Called to Order President Chair De'Carlo Garcia called this meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. Pledge of Allegiance The attendees present recited the Pledge. 3. Approval of Agenda Mr. Garcia asked to approve the agenda. Motion made to approve the agenda by Ms. Sallberg and seconded by Mr. Nelson. 4. Mayor's Minutes Topics 4.1 Sickle Cell Anemia Blood Drive- Will be held, Thursday, June 15, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Crestview Community Center. 4.2 Big Brothers, Big Sisters -The City Manager (Tim Bolduc) is trying to get the community interested in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. There will be a breakfast at the Crossing on Saturday, June 17th, to go over the details. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. 4.3 Juneteenth- Monday, June 19th, there will be a Juneteenth event at the Old Spanish Trail Park. The gates open at 11:00 a.m. There will be a walkthrough at 1:00 p.m. and a DJ for most of the event, six food trucks, and forty vendors. 5. Action Item 5.1 Member -Specific Topics: Mr. Garcia asked the committee members if they would like to revisit the idea of member -specific focus areas previously discussed, where each member would speak on a specific topic, they might be knowledgeable about. Discussion ensued. ACTION: Mr. Garcia asked if the members wanted to make a motion to table the discussion. Ms. Sallberg made a motion to table the discussion until the next meeting and Ms. Shanklin seconded the motion. 5.2 Crestview School Poster Contest: As Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month approaches, the mayor is calling on the Committee members to brainstorm ideas on how to educate the public about the significance of pedestrian safety. Both pedestrians and drivers who are distracted need to be more aware of the hazards of not being vigilant. The mayor has requested Mr. Garcia to create a proposal to present to the Okaloosa County Superintendent, with the aim of involving children in this initiative. ACTION: The Committee will revisit this discussion at the next meeting after Mr. Garcia has had a chance to meet with the superintendent. 5.3 Citizen Advisory Logo: Mr. Garcia has created a Citizen Advisory logo and presented it to the committee. ACTION: Mr. Garcia requested to propose a motion concerning the logo's approval with the intention of making adjustments. Ms. Sallberg put forward the motion to approve, which was seconded by Mr. Estes. 6. Approval of May's Minutes: Mr. Garcia inquired about the committee's decision to approve May's Minutes. Mr. Estes proposed a motion to approve the minutes, which was seconded by Ms. Sallberg. 7. Other Topics 7.1 Choose the View- The purpose of this mission is to promote Crestview as the ideal destination for dining, living, working, playing, and worshiping. Chance intends to spread the word about the wonders of Crestview, not just in the town itself but also in other cities, to showcase why it's an excellent place to be. Discussion ensues. 7.2 Community Bulletin Board at the Parks- Mr. Estes revisited the topic of city parks and their amenities. He presented his idea of creating informative boards at each park, complete with location maps of Crestview and markers indicating the current park and other city parks. Additionally, he suggested listing the amenities available at each park. Furthermore, it would be beneficial to include a list of city phone numbers and display flyers promoting upcoming city events. To ensure all information is visible, a double -sided board would be ideal for this purpose. The mayor proposed a meeting between Mr. Estes, the Director of Facility Maintenance, and himself to evaluate the feasibility of the bulletin boards at the parks. Following this, Mr. Estes will update the committee on the outcome of the discussion. Closing Remarks There are no closing remarks.
