HomeMy Public PortalAbout07-29-1965 2- BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY July 29, 1965 The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Richmond, Indiana, met in regular session in the City Hall in said City, Thursday, July 29, 1965 at the hour of 9:00 a.m. (est). Mr. Jameson presiding with the following members being present: Mr. Gehr and Mr. Kemper. The following business was had to wit: The Clerk read the minutes of the previous meeting. There being no corrections or additions, Mr. Kemper moved the minutes beapproved as read. This motion was seconded by Mr. Gehr and on voice vote was unanimously carried. Mr. Gehr moved the clAims be allowed and paid, seconded by Mr. Kemper and on voice vote was carried. Fire Chief Fredricks reported that the windows on the third floor were in need of repair due to the recent wind and storm blowing some of them out completely. The Board authorized the Mayor to employ a reputable carpenter to make repay to the windows. Fire Chief Fredricks reported the following tabulation on the bids for a new car for the Fire Chief that were received July 22, 1965: Kurdys Chevrolet, Inc. 1965 Belair $2,298.52 Fred First,Inc. 1965 Ford Custom $2,266.98 Fire Chief Fredricks recommended the bid of the Durdys Chevrolet, Inc. as being the best bid submitted. City Attorney Kemper will prepare an ordinance for authorization to make purchase of this car to be presented to the Common Council. Mr. George Sawyer, Attorney-at-Law presented the following: STATE OF INDIANA ) ) SS: TO THE CITY OF RICHMOND COUNTY OF WAYNE ) BOARD OF WORKS MARVIN CAYWOOD, ) COMPLAINANT ) VS ) NOTICE OF WITHDRAWAL OFFICERS COLLINS DICKERSON ) AND CHARLES HART ) DEFENDANTS ) Comes now George E.Sawyer, Attorney=at-Law, and serves notice of withdrawal from the above named cause for reasons following: 1. That I do not condone nor approve the actions of defendants in the use of excessive violence in the arrest of the complainant on the 23rd day of May, 1965. 2. Nor do I condone or approve of the violence used against the person of a sixteen year old girl by complainant on the 17th day of•July, 1965, whether said violence was provoked or unprovoked. 3. That due to the said action of complainant on the 17th day of July, 1965, and due to the standards that I have affixed to my legal practice and my daily living, I find it impossible to continue to represent complainant in this cause. - WHEREFORE it is respectfully prayed that the name of George E. Sawyer be with- drawn and stricken from the records in this cause. /s/George E.Sawyer, Attorney at Law. Mr. Kemper moved the Notice of Withdrawal as submitted be received and made a record of this meeting. This motion was seconded by Mr. Llehr and on voice vote was carried. The Clerk presented proofs of publication of notice printed in the Richmond Pall- adium-Item, a local newspaper of general circulation in the City of Richmond, Indiana on the dates of July 2 and 9, 1965 that sealed proposals would be received until the hour of 10:00 o'clock a.m. (est) July 29, 1965 for construction of a Surgace Water Drainage, Section D, Storm sewer extention from existing sewer at N.W. 20th Street and alley north of Main Street to existing sewer south of N.W. "C" Street all in accordance with plans and specifications. r. Kemper examined the proofs of publ- ication of notice and found the same to be correct and in order -and moved the same be received and filed. Mr. Gehr seconded this motion and on voice vote was carried. Thursday, July 29, 1965 at the hour of 10:00 o'clock a.m. (est) being the date and time to receive and open proposals to do the above construction, the following bidders submitted bids: Ralph Reed & Son, Inc., Anderson, Indiana Curry Const. Co., Bloomington, Indiana DeBolt Const.Co. Richmond, Indiana Tousley-Bixler Const. Indianapolis, Indiana G.F.Kopetsky Const. Indianapolis, Indiana Weitzel Const. Co. - Indianapolis, Indiana Mr. Kemper moved the bids received be referred to the Henry B. Steeg & Assoc. and the City Engineer for study and recoiir,iendations. This motion was seconded by Mr. Gehr and on voice vote was carried. A petition for a street light installation at the intersection of Sout Perry and "L" Streets wqs referred to the City Controller. Mr. Burelison, St. Comm. requested permission to purchase 2 chain saws for use by the Street Dept. in the amount of $350.00. Mr. Gehr moved the request be granted, seconded by Mr. Kemper and on voice vote was carried. The Traffic Division was ordered to investigate the elimination of parking on both sides of Elm Street from North llth Street west to a point west of the Pure'0i1 Service Station. The Board approved a resolution be prepared for Common Council's consideration to transfer the "sum of $500.00 from J-6a, Street Light extension, Board of Works, to J-12b, Weed Cutting and Removal, Board of Works. This money to be used to establish an account to pay forth cutting of weeds on lots of owners that do not comply with the order to cut the weeds within the time limit set-out in the present Ordinance. The owner will be billed and ordered to ,y the price it costs the City to cut the weeds. If the owner fails to pay, the City Controller will report the cost to the WayneCounty Treasurer to be placed on the tax duplicate. In many cases the owner reports that the weeds would be cut if someone could be found that does this type of work. Mayor ordell stated that he has been approached by a reliable person with the proper equipment that would do this for a very nominal fee per hour. Mr. Calvalege, Building Insp. presented the following bids received for demolation of the house located at 622 North 22nd Street. Charles Harmon $500.00 Ralph Burrell $250.00 Mr. Kemper moved that the bid of Ralph Burrell be accepted on condition he shows that he can furnish the proper insurance to do the work. Mr. Gehr seconded this motion and on voice vote was carried. Mr. Kemper will prepare a contract if Mr. Burrell qualifies to do the work.
