BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
APRIL 18, 1963
The Boardpf Public Works and Safety met in regular session with City
Attorney Cecere presiding. All members were present. The following
business was had to with
Mr. Forrest Sipe, representative of the Midget Race Stadium, appeared
before the Board,concerning andinvestigation of the facilities at the
stadium by Building Commissioner Sligar, Fire Inspector Wadman, Res-
taurant Inspector Goins, Health Inspector Hutton, and Henniger of the
R P & L. Toilet facilities were found not to meet with laws governing
the same. Mr. Sipe was instructed to install a leach bed and septic
tank, also to make repairs to the stands by replacement of some deter-
iorated walkways and seat boards. It was recommended to Mr. Sipe that
he engage a competant carpenter to make the needed repairs and replace-
ments to the stands to put it in a safe condition.
The Board approved a request by the Industries Inc. to change the name
of the Ruhlin Road to "Industries Road", and instructed the Clerk to
prepare an Ordinance to submit to Council.
Petitions for .street lights at the following locations were referred to
the R P & L for study and preparation of an estimate of cost : Catalpa
Drive, Mendelson Dive, Crestdale Subdivision, Locust Drive, and North-
west "L" Street in the 400 Block. -
The Board instructed City Engineer Sherick to prepare plans and spec-
ifications for the improvement of the "G" Street Bridge by new paved
surface, curbs, and sidewalks.
The Board instructed the Clerk to prepare an ordinance for an additional
appropriation for $1000.00 in the Fire Department Budget to pay the water
bill for the balance of 1963. -
The Board approved a recommendation by Police Chief Conyers to appoint
Jewel .Scott as a regular patrolman, effectibe April 11, 1963. Scott
has served the one year probationary period.
Captain Stout, P.itce Traffic Division, submitted a traffic survey
of accidents at the intersection of US 40 & US 35 east of Richmond
and recommended that a flasher type signal be installed instead of the
stop and. ;go sign which was knocked dam by andaccident. Captain Stout
will make the recommendation to the State Highway Department.
The Board approved a recommendation by Captain Stout to install Yield
signs at the intersections of Northwest "A" & "B" Streets on 24th,
26th, and 27th Streets making "A" & "B" Streets preferential.
The Board approved a tag day sale for the DAV, Friday May 10,. 1963
The Board approved a parade requested by WKBV, May 4, 1963 - National
Radio Month.
The Board referred three (3) petitions for improvements_sto the Engineer-
ing Department to determine property owners and to prepare estimates
on (1) Sanitary Sewer on Northwest "L" from Northwest 6th Street to the
railroad; (2) Sidewalks on the south side of "A" Street, 24th to 25th
street; (3) Paved Street, South 31st from Southeast Parkway to South "B" St.
The Board approved a recommendation by Captain Stout to instruct the
Street Department to start repainting the street markers (turns, arrows,
and cross walks).
