BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
December 14, 1961
The Boare of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall, with
City Attorney Cecere presiding; all members were present. The following
• business was had, to-wit:
City Controller Tiffany moved that the reading of the minutes of the previous
meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Engineer Sherick.
City Controller Tiffany reported that 50 trash containers have been received
and were being placed on the City Street Corners. The containers are of the
wire basket type.
Representatives of the Motorola and Dumont Radio Companies appeared before
the Board to discuss their bids for radio equipment for the Richmond Fire
Department. The Board deferred awarding the bid until further examination
of the equipment can be made.
William Addler reported that 10 spaces could be made available at the Avco
Plant on the south side of the Williamsburg Pike for parking meters. The Board
deferred action on the matter until further information could be obtained.
Police Chief Conyers reported on the activity of the Radar unit for the past
eight weeks. The operators of the unit stopped 417 cars , giving 229 warnings
and making 188 arrests for §peeding. Conyers said that the unit has caused
traffic to slow down.
The Board approved a recommendation of Police Chief Conyers to discontinue the
low band frequency radio system January 1, 1962.
City Controller Tiffany reported that decals and numbers would be put on city
owned cars for identification purposes.
The Board took under advisement a report from City Controller Tiffany concerning
the parking lot for City employees, opposite the City Building. A plan for
more parking spaces is to be studied.
The Board instructed Police Chief Conyers to check on the "Red Hoods" alloted
to the Court House for special occasions and restrict parking so that persons
on jury duty would have a space to park.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
