BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
September 21, 1961 •
The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall, with City
Attorney Cecere presiding - All members present - The following business was had
to wit:
City Controller Tiffany moved that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting
be dispensed with, seconded by City Engineer Sherick.
Scott Hawley, 531 Northwest "L" Street, submitted a petition signed by 24 property
owners residing on Northwest "L" Street west of Northwest 5th Street, requesting
Northwest "L" Street be resurfaced from Northwest 5th to the Eavey Company. The
Board asked Mr. Hawley to contact the petitioners to get curbs and gutters constructed
through Barrett Law before repairing the street.
The Board approved a request by the Holthouse Furniture Co. to extend the canopy at
their store, 533 Main Street, subject to building code specifications.
A complaint by Mrs. Donie Ward, 108 South 6th Street, that water from the City-owned
South 6th Street Parking Lot was draining:.into her basement, was referred to the City
Engineering Department for inspection.
The Board approved a curb cut of 20 feet for a private drive at 1846 West Main Street,
requested by Earl D. Shaver.
The Board approved the appointment of Carl A. Oldham, 112 Southwest 7th Street,
as crossing guard at South 13th & "E" Street, effective September 18, 1961.
The Board approved a request by the United Fund of Wayne County to erect an imitation
rocket to be used as a thermometer on the corner adjacent to the Second National
Bank, also paper foot steps on the sidewalk, to aid in this year's drive.
The Board rejected a request for a permit to construct a portion of a street on South
24th Street, between South "A" and2N" by E. S. Bultman, contractor.
City Engineer Sherick reported that he would attend the National Public Works
Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, September 25-29.
The Board ordered the traffic department to erect "No Dumping" signs at Southwest
"G" and Whitewater Blvd.
The Board approved a recommendation by Captain Stout, traffic department , to place
a sign "Stop Here On Red" at the obedience line at Southwest 5th & National Road.
The Board signed a contract with the Indiana State Highway Commission, presented
to the Board by Pete Batson, District Superintendant, to sweep the streets within the
City that are used as State Routes, the City to receive $6.50 per hour, for not more
than 15 hours per week - contract number 16368 - effective September 1, 1961.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
