HomeMy Public PortalAbout09-14-1961 Page 171 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY September 14, 1961 The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall, with City Attorney Cecere presiding - All members present - The following business was had to wit: City Controller Tiffany moved that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Engineer Sherick. Approximately 50 persons residing in the Vaile School area attended the meeting, their concern being the traffic signal at South 13th & E Street, that was changed from a "stop and go" signal to a flasher type signal after the recommendation of the traffic department. Mr. James Dwyer, 419 South 14th Street, acting as spokesman for the group, said that he had a petition signed by 1130 persons . asking to have the traffic signal changed back to the "stop & go" or a delayed type of signal. Board president Cecere asked Captain Woolf of the juvenile: dividion for his recommendation after having made a count of school children crossing the intersection. Captain Woolf said there were 51 students crossing South E Street from 12th to 15th Streets four times per day, making a total of 204 crossings daily, and that for the greatest safety for these children, he would make a recommendation that the traffic signal be eliminated all together and an adult crossing guard be stationed there. City Controller Tiffany moved that the Board concur with the recommendation of Captain Woolf, seconded by City Engineer Sherick. The Board instructed Police Chief Conyers to continue the flasher traffic signal until Monday, September,18, when a crossing guard will be on duty. Also, the students are to be instructed to cross at South 13th & E Street. Mr. Earl Daggy was given permission to change the course of a small stream to meet a Sewer on the south side of West Main Street, west of Marsh's Supermarket. The Board approved the recommendation of Police Chief Conyers to send Detective - Lawrence Turner to the seminar on Ht5micide Investigation at the University of Cincinnati on November 13th to 18th. The Board instructed City Controller Tiffany to investigate the matter of ob- taining trash containers to be placed on Main Street. The Board approved a transfer of funds for the restaurant inspector to repair the 1957 Ford, and instructed the clerk to prepare an ordinance to transfer $250.00. Ralph Snavley, inspector of weights and measures, reported that he would attend the annual meeting at Kokomo, October 2-3. The Board instructed Street Commissioner Lawrence to clean out the ditch on the west side of the Elks Country Club Road from the entrance to the Elks Club to the Entrance of the Glen Miller Park. The Board instructed Captain Stout, traffic department, to check the parking meters near parking lots that obstructed moving traffic, with the possibility of removing parking meters that hindered traffic. The Board ordered Police Chief Conyers to install "RADAR CONTROLLED SPEED LIMIT" signs at all entrances to the city before using the radar unit. The Board approved a curb cut, requested by the South llth Street & "A" Realty Inc. at 1015 South "A" , to be used as an entrance only. The Board approved a curb cut for a private drive at 400.
