HomeMy Public PortalAbout05-18-1961 Page 153 -- BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY May 18, 1961 The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall, with City Controller Wilson presiding. All members present, the following business was had to wit: City Engineer Sherick moved that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Controller Wilson. The Board confirmed Improvement Resolution No. -1043-1961, " THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SEWER ON 11TH STREET FROM SOUTH "0" TO A POINT APPROX. 375 FEET NORTH OF - "0" STREET" The Clerk was instructed to advertise for bids to be opened June 8, 1961. Marlin McDaniels, attorney for George Scantland, submitted a contract to the Board stating that he would complete the Street on South 18th between South "H" and "I" streets, as soon as weather permits. Marlin McDaniels attorney, submitted a proposal on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, to exchange their property on South 7th street, consisting of the Eagles Lodge Hall and parking lot, for the City owned South 12th street - parking lot (Garfield School) and $75,000.00 cash. Mayor Cutter, said that in his opinion it would be to costly to. remodel the building to suit the needs for a City Building. City Attorney Cecere stated that he would like for the City to have a new City Building in the future, planned for the needs of each department. Mr. McDaniels said he would like to present more details as to remodeling costs. and the usability of the facilities of their property for a City Building. City Attorney Cecere moved that the proposal be taken under advisement until further information concerning the building is presented to the Board, 4 Seconded by City Controller Wilson. . . William King, 1206 Abington Pike, submitted a petition for a fire hydrant at the end of the Abinton Pike, referred to the City En gineer to confer with the Fire Chief for recommendation. . The Board approved a recommendation by Captain Stout, Traffic, to restrict parking for one day May 30, 1961 (race day) on the South side of National Road from South West 2nd to South West 4th street, and on Main street from East 3rd to East 17th street on the South side only. . The Board approved a recommendation from Police Chief Conyers to send Donald Blose, Louis Bibbs and Robert Coons to the Indiana University Chemical Tests for intoxication School in Indianapolis June-5-10; 1961. - - City Controller Wilson moved, on the recommendation of Police Chief Conyers to appoint Ronald Phenis, 108- North 21st street (23 yr) as a patrolman for a one year probationary period, effective June 1, 1961, seconded by City Attorney Cecere . • . The Board instructed Street Commissioner Lawrence to complete the base on West 1 Main Street from West 18th to the Salisbury Road Monday, May 22, 1961, as black topping would start Tuesday May 23, 1961. The Board received a bill of $811.00 for repairs to the intersection at South 8th & "B" Street from the Robinson Bros. Construction Co. City Controller Wilson is to arrange a meeting with a representive of the Water Works Corporation to discuss the division of the-bill.
