BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
RICHMOND, INDIANA
January 5, 1961
The Board of Public Works and Safety, met in regular session in City Hall
at 9:00 AM, with City Controller Wilson presiding. Board members City
Attorney Cecere and City Engineer Sherick were present. The following
business was had to-wit:
City Controller Wilson, moved that the reading of the minutes of the
previous meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Attorney Cecere.
Mr. Leslie Sherick, being appointed City Engineer, as of January 1, 1961,
automatically becomes a member of the Board of Works and Safety.
City Attorney Cecere, moved that City Controller Wilson be reappointed
President of the Board, seconded by City Engineer Sherick. Wilson made
a brief acceptance speech.
Ramsey McDonald (radio-telephone) reported to the Board that the Federal
Government had rejected a request for matching funds for radio equipment,
as matching funds can be obtained only for installation of a new system.
(not for expansion) The Board ordered City Controller Wilson to investigate
the requirements for our radio system.
A petition submitted by the Board of School Trustees, of the City of
Richmond, Indiana , for the improvement of South "P" to South "Q" street,
was referred to the office of the City Engineer for recommendation and
estimate.
James A. Walters, 900 South 10th street, was appointed as a probationary
firemen (1 year) to the Richmond Fire Department, effective January 10, 1961.
Jack Cruse, was appointed as a probationary fireman (1 year ) to the Richmond
Fire Department, effective January 1, 1961.
Captain Stout, Traffic Department, reported that the Indiana State Highway
Department has installed " No Parking " signs on the east side of south 9th
street, from south "A" to south "L" and on both sides of south 9th street
from Main street to the Leland Parking Lot, and on north 9th street the east
side from north "A" to the south building line of the telephone office.
Captain Stout, said that north "C" street from 8th to 9th street was now open
for one-way traffic westbound.
The Board ordered Captain Stout to make a traffic study of other streets,
with a possibility of converting other streets to one-way in conjuction with
the new 8th and 9th streets being changed to one-way traffic, and suggested
6th, 7th and 10th streets, for study.
Fire Chief Klotz, recommended to the Board that the following men that have
served their years probationary period be appointed regular fireman, Tom
Barker, Robert Goodwin, Robert McLear, John Newland, Marion Schweizer and
Saint Wright. City Attorney Cecere moved that the men be made regular fireman,
seconded by City Controller Wilson.
111 The Board approved a request by Fire Chief Klotz to send two (2) firemen to
a fire instructors school at Purdue, January 16th to 20th, 1961.
Fire Chief Klotz, recommended the hiring of three additional men for the
Fire Department, the Clerj{ was instructed to prepare an Ordinance for
$14400.00 to present to the Common Council. ( $13875.00 for payroll and
$525 for clothing allowance)
Fire Chief Klotz and City Engineer Sherick will inspect other fire stations
in this area to obtain ideas and costs to aid in the planning of the new
fire station at south 8th and "L" street.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
