HomeMy Public PortalAbout09-29-1960 Page 114 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY September 29, 1960 The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall with City Controller Wilson presiding, Sanitary District Supt. Ross, attending in place of City Engineer Deuker, the following business was had to-wit: City Controller Wilson, moved that the reading of the minutes-of the previous meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Attorney Cecere. H.C. Peters, 1116 West Main street, appeared before the Board with a complaint of dust from the gravel drive ways at the armory, which belongs to the Federal Government. The Clerk was instructed to write to the adjutant asking that the drive be oiled. Twelve persons representing the Hibberd School P.T.A. appeared before the Board, concerning a crossing guard at South 9th and "J" streets. The Board studied pictures and traffic counts taken by Capt. Stout and Lt. Wolf. The Traffic Department will continue to survey the area and make a recommenda- tion at the Board meeting next week ( Oct 6, ). Mayor Cutter said that he had made a personal survey of the intersection, and that the smaller children were doing a good job in crossing the street at the cross walks, but the older ones crossed anywhere within a two block area. Mr. Henn, Councilman, spoke in favor of immediately placing a crossing guard there, and said he would initiate proceedings in Council to that effect. Board President Wilson, said the policy of the Board is to act on the recommend- ation of the Traffic Department in matters concerning Traffic. The Board ordered no parking signs on the west side of the street and lines marked out in front of Smith's grocery and to repaint the cross walks at the intersection of South 9th and "J" street, to aid in crossing the street. Mrs. Aso Browning, 38 North We "E" street, appeared before the Board with a petition signed by 145 persons residing in the vicinity of West 1st and Richmond,Ave. , for a traffic signal or a device to aid in crossing the street at the intersection, referred to Captain Stout for study and recommendation. Robert Allen, realtor, appeared before the Board for the purpose of dedicating land, owned by Earl &. Mae Daggy to the City of Richmond for the extension of Southwest 20th street, ( a strip 50 ft. wide and 766 ft long from main street south, and a strip 45 ft—wide and 112 ft. long for the extension of southwest "A" street to the east , subject to the suggestion and recommendation of the Board' approval The Board approved the dedication of land for opening and establishing an extension of Northwest 20th street, granted by the following owners, Opal J. Brooks, Earl and Mae Dagr, Clarence and Erna Fudge, Rola and Patricia Walls, and Walter and Blanche Grundmann. Councilman Frank Marino, reported the bad condition of the brick sidewalk between 6th and 7th streets on the North side of South "C" street, referred to Street Commissioner Lawrence.
