HomeMy Public PortalAbout06-30-1960 Page 95 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY June 30, 1960 The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall with City Controller Wilson presiding, all members present, the following business was had...to-wit: Board President Wilson moved that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Engineer Deuker. • Mrs. Carrie Neff, appeared before the Board asking permission to live in a trailer on a lot in the rear of 1600 Block of Oakland Ave. , while a house is being built on the lot, matter referred to the Board of Zoning Appeals. The Board accepted the resignation of Russell Garrett from the Fire Department, effective July 1, 1960. Mr. Garrett is retiring on pension after having completed 25 years of service. The Clerk was instructed to write a letter of appreciation. The Board approved the following promotions in the Fire Department effective July 1, 1960: Lieutenant Leavell to Captain Fireman Richardson to Lieutenant Temporary Fireman Perkins to Probationary Fireman Jack Cruze-- Employed temporarily for summer vacation relief The Board instructed the Police Department to warn peddlers and beggars that they would be arrested under a City Ordinance. Police Chief Mitrione, asked the Board for a 282 months leave of absence, starting August 8, 1960. City Attorney Cecere said that legally the Ill Board has authority to grant the leave, therefore he moved to grant the leave, unanimous Board approval. Fire Chief Klotz, recommended to the Board that Fireman James Everett be dismissed from the department for failure to appear before the Board for a hearing, concerning his absenteeism from duty as a fireman. Chief Klotz said Fireman Everett was notified by regular U S Mail to his last and usual place of residence to appear for .a hearing before the Board of Public Works and Safety Thursday June 30, 1960. He failed to appear and the Board received ne demand for a hearing from the subject, therefore the Board moved that James Everett is hereby dismissed from the Richmond Fire Department as probationary Fireman, effective immediately, unanimous Board approval. The Board instructed City Engineer Deuker to confer with the `dater Works Corp. concerning the installation of a fire hydrant back of the Armory, for Fire Department training purposes. City Attorney Cecere moved that the Board of Public Works and Safety prepare a resoultion for the improvement. of a portion of South 18th street. Between "H" and "I" streets, seconded by City Controller Wilson. The Board instructed William Addler of the Parking Meter Department to work with the Light Plant in obtaining an estimate for the lighting of the City Parking Lot at North 6th street. Richmond Common Council Members, Johnson, J. Hoskins, C. Hoskins, Yount and Smithmeyer, attended the Board of Works meeting to hear James Cox, Engineer of the Indiana State Highway Department, explain the States part in the new one-way streets (8th & 9th). Mr. Cox phoned that he was unadvoidably detained in Indianapolis, but would be at next weeks meeting. City Engineer Deuker presented maps of North "B"--"C"---"D" streets and the Board explained the Cities plans in conjuction with the one way streets in that area. • Page 96 June <3.0, 1960 The Board received a complaint from George Banta 1612 South 7th street, of the bad condition of the street (high crown) in the .1600 block, referred to the street department. Clara L. Hoskins reported complaints of dustin the alley at the East end 111 of the 1400 block on Ridge street, referred to the street department. Building Commissioner Sligar', reported he had served notice of condemnation proceedings to owners of buildings at 531 North 17th street. The Clerk was instructed to write a letter to the Industrial Relations Manager of the Beldon Mfg. Co. , concerning employees parking their cars on the streets.in that area, instead of the company parking lot. The Board approved a curb cut at 2715 Reeveston Road at the request of . William Salzarulo. The Board moved, that water hydrants for Fire Protection be installed at: ' Baltimore and Indianapolis streets, the matter referred to the City ' Engineering Department to confer with the Richmond Water Works Corporation as to route and layout. • There being no further business, the meeting adjourned. • • - President .
