HomeMy Public PortalAbout06--02-1960 Page 88 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY JUNE 2, 1960 The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall with City Controller Wilson presiding, all members present. The following business was had to-wit: City Controller Wilson, moved the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with, seconded by City Attorney Cecere. The Board approved a request from the retail merchants association to use the sidewalks to display their wares June 3-4- (fun in the sun ) The Board moved to concur with the recommendations of City Engineer Deuker for two 30 ft. entrances to the Tiny Diner Drive-in at 1225 South 9th street. The Board granted Mrs. Bullerdick permission for a curb cut for a drive-way at 821 South "E" street. The Board instructed the Clerk to inform the owners of a parking lot east of South 8th and "E" street on the South side, to have a rear exit into the alley. The Board refused to grant a request of the Ohio Oil Co. for 40'curb cuts at the proposed service station at South 9th and "G" street (northeast corner) The Board moved to adopt a resolution to transfer $15,000 from off street Parking to the General Fund for the improvement of North "D" street. The People's Home and Saving's, were granted permission by the Board to move a temporary office building from North 9th street to 1015 South 5th street. Street Commissioner, Manley Lawrence discussed the merits of the four street sweepers that bids were under consideration, and recommended the Mobil Sweeper manufactured by the Municipal Equipment Co. of Indianapolis, Indiana at a cost of $12,217.65 (including optional equip) . To be delivered in 30 days. City ". Attorney Cecere moved to concur with the Street Commissioners recommendation seconded by City Controller Wilson, unanimous approval. City Attorney Cecere moved that a second street light be removed from in- front of the First Federal Building on North 9th street, subject to the First Federal Saving's and Loan Association providing light during the time needed for street lights. The Board approved the appointment of Larry Heathcoe, on the recommendation of Fire Chief Klotz to the Fire Department and started the one year probationary period June 1, 1960. Beatrice Kelly, 43 Northwest "J" street, retired from the Fire Department June 1, 1960, the Board instructed the Clerk to write him a letter of thanks for his 24 years of loyal and meritorious service to the City and Community. Fire Chief Klotz, reported good results from the departments house to house survey for possible fire hazards, with cooperation of the press, radio and the people. The Board referred a petition for a street light between 5th and 6th on South "C" street to the light plant for an estimate of cost and recommendation. The Board recommends the installation of new lighting on 8th and 9th streets be planned and completed in conjunction with the opening of the new one way streets. The Board moved on the recommendation of City Controller Wilson to have an official opening in cooperation with the retail merchants association, on the completion of the new lighting on Main Street. City Attorney Cecere, moved the Clerk advertise for bids to raze the building on the South East corner of North 8th and "C" streets, subject to specifications in the office of City Engineer Deuker.
