BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
MAY 26, 1960
The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall
with City Attorney Cecere presiding. President Wilson absent, the following
business was" had to-wit:
City Engineer Deuker moved the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with, seconded by City Attorney Cecere.
The Clerk presented proofs of publication that this date had been set to
open sealed bids for the coal contract and bituminous street materials. The
proofs were accepted and ordered filed. Bids were received from the following
companys for coal, Kendall Coal Co. , Muff Coal Co. and Fisher Lumber & Supply.
Bids were received for bituminous street materials from three divisions of the
Magaw Co, -Asphalts Inc. Construction Inc. and Hot Mix Inc. City Attorney
_ Cecere moved that all bids be taken under advisement, seconded by City
Engineer Deuker.
Leo Wissel, 225 South 6th street appeared before the Board with a petition
signed by 9 persons for the installation of a street light at the alley
between 5th and 6th streets on South "C" street, the matter was referred to
the traffic division of the Police Department for study and recommendation.
The Board approved, on recommendation of Fire Chief Klotz, the suspension of
Fireman Joe Brennan from duty from May 17th to June 16th 1960, for conduct
unbecoming a fireman.
The Board approved a request by Fire Chief Klotz, for a change to light weight
uniforms during the summer months for the firemen.
The Board approved a request from the First Federal Savings and Loan Co. to
have an ornamental light on the West side of North 9th street at the alley
South of the Post Office removed.
The Board rejected a request from H.C. Zeiler of the McCory-McLellan store
to cover a parking meter in front of the store during a 2 day bargin sale
June 3rd and 4th, 1960.
The Board referred to the City Engineer's office the matter of a parking
lot in conjuction with the alley at the rear of the new First Federal
Building.
The Board authorized a new curb from Sailor Street to the Telephone Building
on the East side of North 9th street,
Police Chief Mitrione, reported that new radio equipment would cost $5321.25
as their half of the total cost, Federal Funds will supply the other half.
City Attorney Cecere, reported a meeting will be held May 27, 1960 with
Lt. Col. Morris E. Foist of the Indiana Adjutant General's office, to discuss
the deed and the agreement which contains eight items calling for the Cities
participation in the cost of the new armory.
Mayor Cutter, said he had been in discussion with several persons interested
in having West Main street paved from 19th street to the Salisbury Road, and
that the project should be carried out at an early date.
City Engineer Deuker, reported that he has contacted officials of the Penn.
Railroad, and they have promised to start repairs on the North 19th street
bridge next week, also the Board authorized having a load limit of 5 tons
gross weight on the bridge, and instructed the traffic department to install
signs to that effect.
The Board referred the matter of curbs and curb cuts at 1225 South 9th street
to Capt. Stout, traffic division, for recommendation. (drive-in-diner) .
The Board approved curb cuts for private drives at 1201 Harris Street and
1229 Ratliff Street, also the widening of the entrance to 2001 Chester Blvd.

The Board approved the changes and recommendations of City Engineer Deuker
for a new building in the 3000 block of East Main Street. (Raper Sales)
There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
