HomeMy Public PortalAbout05-12-1960 get BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY MAY 12, 1960 The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall with City Controller Wilson presiding. All members present. The following business was had to-wit: City Engineer Deuker moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes. of the previous meeting, seconded by City Attorney Cecere. Cliff Mendleson, realtor, appeared before the Board inquiring about the status of the building owned by Mrs. Elinor Webb,at 11-13 South 9th street, for the possibility of obtaining a lease. The commissioner of buildings has declared the building as "Unsuitable for Occupancy". The Board instructed Mr. Mendleson to set forth a specific list of his clients aims to conform with fire regulations, for the City Engineer to study. The Board of Public Works and Safety signed a supplement agreement with the town of Spring Grove to furnish fire protection, whereas the Indiana Rating Bureau has agreed to reclassify Spring Grove, concerning rates applicable for • fire insurance. The Board received a resolution from the State Highway Department, restrict- ing parking as follows: (a) No parking any time, on either side of Northwest 5th street, (US 35 ) between a point 250 ft. North of Richmond Ave. and Main street. (b) No parking any time, on either side of Southwest 5th street (US 40 ) Westbound between Main street and the National Road. Robert O'Maley, attorney for the Gilmer Trailer Court appeared before the Board, asking for an extension of time for the compliance of the Boards recommendations for the improving of Health and Safety conditions on the premises. Mr. O'Maley presented a letter of intent setting forth nine points of procedure on improving the Court as follows: 1. Acquire perimeter survey and set stakes. (completed) 2. Provide Light Plant with copy of survey. (completed) 3. Light Plant set upon premises preliminary stakes for location of poles. (competed) 4. Acquire services of R.W. Clinton & Associates to prepare plat of premises and to secure approval of all required State and local agencies for all trailer and other installations, (completed) 5. Cooperate with Light Plant and Fire Department at all times pending final approval of. plat. 6. Clinton secure approval of agencies stipulated by Board of Works including Office of State Marshall of Fire and State Board of Health. 7. Acquire services of licensed electrician to make new installations. 8. Move trailers to conform to plat. 9. Money has been borrowed to do the job. Mortgage recorded May 3, 1960 The Board granted the Gilmer Trailer Court an extension of time, until June 16, 1960 when the court will be inspected and a report made to the Board of Works as to the compliance of its orders. The Clerk presented proofs of publication that this date had been set to open sealed bids for 2 cars for the use of the Fire Department, the following bids were received: Bowens Inc. Comet $1660.00 Mercury $2411.98 Dea Meadows Ford Falcon 1565.00 Ford 2150.00 City Attorney Cecere moved to accept the low bid of Dea Meadow Ford, seconded by City Controller Wilson. The Board gave permission to Fire Chief Klotz to send Fireman Burdsall and Green to Purdue University May 24-25-26 for training. The Board gave Fire Chief Klotz permission to take applications for a trainee for Hose House #2. Of The Board, on recommendation of Police Chief Mitrione appointed Claude Hunt a regular Patrolman, upon completeing the one year probationary period, effective May 6, 1960. The Clerk read a petition from property owners in the vicinity of Southwest "A" street on 8th street, to install curbs and gutters along both sides of Southwest 8th street from Southwest "A" street to National Road, the matter referred to City Enginner Deuker for study. A' petitionfor curbs and:gutters on:both sides of Peacock Road from ' Northwest 13th street to Northwest 18th street was presented to the Board by property owners in that vicinity. The matter referred to City Engineer Deuker for study and recommendation. The Board granted approval to the Wayne County Tuberculosis Association to station the chest X-Ray unit at the 8th street entrance to Knollenbergs Store, for one week beginning Thursday June 9, 1960. Fire Chief Klotx, reported a hazardous condition of dead trees and debris in the open ditch from 21st street West from'_.; 600 Block, referred to the street Department. Police Chief Mitrione, presented a sample of the inspection certificates for Taxi-cabs, the inspection will go into effect July 1 , 1960. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
