HomeMy Public PortalAbout02-18-1960 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY February 18, 1960 The Board of Public Works and Safety met- in regular session in City Hall with City Controller Wilson presiding. All members present. The following business was had To- Wit: • Fire Chief Klotz appeared before the Board to discuss the possibility of using Illseveral buildings, due to be razed for training purposes for the Fire Department, it was decided that none of the locations were suitable to burn, as they are to close to other buildings. Fire Chief reported that Mr. Susanki, Insurance Rating Engineer, from Indianapolis would be here the last of March to inspect the sites under consideration for the new South End Fire Station. Mayor Cutter said he would contact Mr. Susanki to try to get earlier action from him. City Engineer Deuker moved that the Board accept the low bid of Kurdy's Chevrolet for the two new cars to be used by the Police Department. Board President Wilson seconded the motion, and instructed the Clerk to advise Kurdy's of the Boards action. City- Engineer Deuker presented a map of a district bounded by the National Road and School Street, ( North and South) Salisbury Road and 17th Street ( East and West) to discuss the drainage problem in this district. The question was originated by Earl Daggy, owner of property between Marsh's Food Market and WKBV Radio Station, Mr. Daggy is desirous of developing said property for commercial-use. The matter was referred to the City Engineers office for further study. City Controller Wilson reported that approx. $9000.00 'in additional funds would have to be appropriated froth the City General Fund to pay the County for the expenses of the November 1959 election, the additional amount is due to the number of precincts added to the City by annexation. The Board approved the Light Plants estimate for a street light at South 14th between M & 0 Streets, and instructed the Clerk to advise Mr. Beck of the MEL & PP to proceed with the installation. The Clerk was instructed to write a letter to the C & 0 Railroad Company, requesting them to repair the-Crossing at G-L-N and 0 Streets, as recommended by Councilman Youngflesh of the Richmond Common Council. City Engineer reported a complaint of a sanitary condition (outside toilet) at 1029 South 5th Street. The matter was referred to Sanitary Inspector Hutton. City Attorney told the Board that by legislation passed last year, the new traffic Ordinance would not have to be published in its entirety, if booklets are printed and made available and the Ordinance would become effective 10 days after printing the booklets. Manley Lawrence, Street Commissioner, being in attendance, was informed of the bad condition of the street in Berry Field, reported by Councilman Marino, Mr. Lawrence said that due to construction still in progress, it is difficult to keep the streets in a good state of repair. Rev. Bray Ledford of Christ Tabernacle 56 No. West "H" St. ,reported an iron post protecting a man hole in their parking lot, caused a parking hazard, the matter was referred to the Street Department. City Attorney Cecere made a motion to originate a preliminary resolution for the improvement of a section of South 18th Street between "H" and "I" Streets, the motion was seconded and so ordered.
