BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
FEBRUARY 4, 1960
• The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular session in City Hall, with
City Controller Wilson presiding. All members 'present. The reading of the
minutes of the previous meeting were dispensed with. The following business
• was had To- Wit.
Mr. Ken Green, sales engineer for the Burn Zol Company, Minneapolis, Minn.
appeared before the Board and ask permission to install a incinerator at Eavey's
West side super market: on a 30 day trial basis, City Attorney Cecere moved
to approve the installation, subject to the approval of the building
commissioner and the Fire Department. Seconded by City Engineer Deuker.
Mr. Harry Turner, appeared before the Board on behalf of the local chapter
of Disabled Veterans, asking permission for a group to sell For-Get-Me-Nots,
on the City Streets, May 6th and 7th. Board President Wilson moved to approve
the sales, subject to the local organization furnishing the Police Dept. With
the names of the salesmen prior to May 6th.

Henry L. Owens 1811 South 9th Street, was awarded the contract to raze the
dwelling at 408 North 15th Street, owned by Ethel Gibson on his Low bid of
$5.00, subject to the execution of a contract prepared by City Attorney Cecere
between the building commissioner and said contractor; pursuant to statute,
and subject to the contractor providing sufficient liability and compensation
insurance.
Ford 0. Roan 382 South 16th St. was awarded the contract to raze the dwellingat
1134 Sheridan St. owned by Lorena Dunham on his low bid of $149.50, subject
to the execution of a contract prepared by the 'City Attorney, between the building
commissioner and said contractor, pursuant to statute, and subject to the contractor
providing sufficient liability and compensation insurance.
The Board instructed the Clerk to write to George Scantland, contractor,
requesting him to improve the street on South 18th between South "H" and "I" St.
Police Chief Mitrione, submitted his January "Loss Time" report to the Board
loss man hours was 14• compared with 32 in January 1959 and 42 in January1958.
The Chief attributes the new work schedule as the main factor in the decrease
of lost time. Chief Mitrione also, entertained a suggestion that the Board
study the possibility of flu shots for the Department.
.Mayor Roland H. Cutter, told the Board of a joint meeting with the Common
Council, Departments Heads and the Board of Public Works and Safety, in the Council
Chambers Tuesday, February 9,1960 at 7:00 PM.

The Board received a petition from residents in the vicinity of South 14th and
"M" Street, for a street light. The matter was referred to the Light Plant for
recommendation and estimate.
- The Clerk was instructed to advertisa for a Public hearing February 25, 1960 at
• 9:00 AM. for persons interested in Assessment Roll 1027-1959.
The Clerk was instructed to write a letter to J. Richard Kemper, -attorney for the
South Side Improvement Assc. to obtain a quit claim deed to a portion of their
property in the vicinity of South 8th between "M" and "N" Streets, with the
possibilty of constructing a fire house there, subject to the approval of the
Fire Dept. and Mr. Susanki of the insurance rating bureau.

The Board granted Capt.Stout, permission to attend a traffic engineering
school February 10th, 11th, 12th, at the University of Purdue.
The Richmond Industrial Center was granted permission for a curb cut of 45 ft.
on North 15th St.- to enlarge their entrance.
The Board approved Capt. Stout's recommendation to restrict parking in the 300
• Blk. of North 3rd St. in the vicinity of Moores restaurant, also to extend the
yellow curb on Northwest 8th St. accross from Parkview School.
