Board Of Works And Safety

November 5, 1959
The Board of Public Works and Safety met in regular sessions in
City Hall with City Controller Wilson presiding. All present .
Minutes dispensed with. The following business was had To -Wit: •
The City Engineer presented a petition for curbs, gutters and
sidewalks on S.W. "F" St. from S.W. 1st St. to Abington Pike, .
and movedthat Improvement Resolution No. 1035-1959 be adopted.
Seconded by City Controller Wilson.
The following curb cuts were approved: 1309 S. !J" St . 3OI
So. 1.5th St .
City Engineer Deuker moved that Light Plant estimate No. 1.726-1959
for two street lights on S.W. "G" between S.W. 17th and 18th be
taken under advisement . Seconded by City Controller Wilson.
Judge Ronald reported to the Boards that some of the taxi cabs in
operation in the city were not mechanically safe and asked if the
Boards had any program of safety-checking local taxi cabs. The
Board asked the Traffic Dept to :have all owners of local taxi cab
companies appear before the •Boards at the meeting of November 12, 1959
Police Chief Mitrione said the police crusiers had used more motor
oil than anticipated, and asked if 'a transfer of *I30.00 from
Police Payrolls. to Oil couldbbe intiated. The Board approved this
request and- instructed the Clerk to prepars an Ordinance for
Council action.

The Traffic Dept. reporting on a previous request for crossing
guards at So. 9th and"J", said that Department and the Juvenille
Dept. had surveyed this crossing and suggested_-mo action be taken
untill a decision is reached regarding_ making 9th St . a one way St .
The board concurredwith this recommendation.
The Board concurred with the recommendations of the Traffic Depart- • .
ment for extension of the yellow curbs on South 8th at "G" and "H"
and ordered the work done .
Lt . Stout was asked to contact Mr. Hoff of the Hoff Sheet Metal
Company and advise him _that the Board did not feel that parking meters sh
should be installed -in the area of his company.
The Board ordered the installation of. parking meters on the east side
of South 8th-Street from S. "B" to S. 70" Street .
Fire Chief. W.illiams reported that the estimated cost of reparing the
fire truck --that was__involved in an accident was 4, 500.00 and asked for an
emergency appropriation -for thata.amount . The Board instructed the Clerk
to prepare an. ordinance for an additional appropriation of *4, 500.00
from the City Genera±.Fund to Repair of Equipment in the Fire Depart-
ment Budget .

The' Board announced that all offices in City Hall would be closed on
Veterans Day, November 11, 1959.
The Clerk read a letter from the Commissioner of Buildings requesting
a 1960 automobile to replace the 1955 model car now being used by this
department . This request was approved and City Attorney Cecere moved
that the -1952 Desoto used by the Engineering Department be traded in
and automobile used by the commissioner of 'Buildings be given to the
Engineer' s Dept. Seconded by City Controller Wilson.
Mayor Cutter reported that Mr. Harry Schuler, member of the Richmond
Retail Merchants, had advised him that his orgainzation 'did not have
sufficient funds to install all of the Christmas lights, but they
would erect the banners at 4th and Main and ' llth and Main.
