IT’S TIME FOR MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT! The annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period is October 15 - December 7 each year. It is important to review your health and prescription coverages during this time to ensure that you have the most cost-effective plans for 2022. Each year, Medicare plans can change premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and even prescription formularies (the list of drugs covered). Often, these changes are significant. Medicare Advantage Plans (HMOs and PPOs) often add and/or drop primary and specialty physicians, skilled nursing facilities and hospitals, so these potential changes are worthy of your attention at this time of year; the only time during the year when you are allowed to make changes. Please contact the Brewster COA 508-896-2737 to make an appointment for Open Enrollment as soon as possible, as we have heavy demand. You will need to bring your Medicare card, a complete list of prescription drugs with dosages, and your insurance cards to the appointment. Cognitive Health Cognitive health is how you think, learn and remember. As we age, these functions tend to decline. It is important to prioritize brain health. Fortunately, the recommendations are almost identical to advice you have probably received for overall physical health and wellbeing. The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends the following: ● Manage chronic health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, and high cholesterol. ● Speak with your health care provider about the medicines you take and possible side effects on memory, sleep, and brain function. ● Reduce risk for brain injuries due to falls and other accidents. ● Limit the use of alcohol. ● Quit smoking, if you currently smoke. Also, avoid other nicotine products such as chewing tobacco. ● Perform regular physical activity. ● Get enough sleep, generally seven to eight hours each night. ● Keep your mind engaged by participating in activities you find personally meaningful. ● Try not to isolate yourself. Regular social contact can help you feel happier, more connected, and improve self-esteem. ● Manage stress through yoga, meditation, journaling, breathing exercises, and practicing positivity. The NIH also suggests eating a Mediterranean Diet as some studies have shown there may be a delay in the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. A Mediterranean diet consists of primarily fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Olive oil is the primary source of fat. Fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy are eaten in moderation. The American Heart Association website states “In one, study, the healthiest eaters at age 50 had a near- ly 90% lower risk of dementia compared with those who had the least healthy diets.” If a diet can reduce the risk of multiple illnesses while promoting brain health, this may be the best starting point for many on their journey to a healthier and happier life. A Message from Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod The Alzheimer's Family Support Center of Cape Cod currently offers many FREE virtual support groups for caregivers, as well as for people experiencing memory loss. Please call 508-896-5170 for more info and to register for the group that best meets your needs and schedule. They also provide step-by-step phone support on how to access these groups through Zoom. We also encourage you to visit their website at www.alzheimerscapecod.org Page 11 October 2021 Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed. Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed. Some say love, it is hunger, an endless aching need. I say love, it is a flower and you have sown a weed! Bette Middler …(a parody) I like to tinker in God’s little half acre which I call home. It keeps me out of the bars and off the street corners, but gets me bitten up pretty good by the no-see-ums, since I frequently and foolishly work out there in short sleeves. All seasoned gardeners know to cover up before you step out there. One day this summer I happened to come across a little plant growing wild in my lawn that I thought was a Montauk Daisy. It was only about three inches tall, with sawtooth leaves, so I rescued it and potted it up. Over the years we have had a wealth of experience with Montauks, a very popular flowering plant here on Cape Cod, since someone at a garden center once told us that you can take cuttings and make many out of one plant, which we did and became overrun with an abundance of Montauks. It was so easy to propa- gate we just could not resist making them. We had so many we gave them to garden clubs, friends, neighbors and wound up throwing them at cars driving down our street. Unfortunately we had so many that the majority of them wound up in the compost bin. We now have none, from hundreds to zero. However, this little three inch guy continues to be fertilized, watered, repotted as it grows, and would not just give up...until Joanie Carfora asked me one day, “What are you going to do with that weed”? She was right, admittedly it was a weed, but it was my weed, which I affectionately named, “King Bong!” So what was I going to do with it? Well, I figured I would continue to water and fertilize it until the end of the season just to see if it would grow higher than Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos’ space vehicles. As they say at Morgan & Morgan, “Size Matters!” Then maybe I’ll dry it out, crush it, roll it into some cigarette papers, invite the neighbors and sit around the firepit smoking it and calling everyone “Dude.” BTW, if there is any interest out there, call me and I will make some cuttings for you so you, too, can also sit around your campfire and share herbalist stories.
