July 2022 July is the month of summer vacations and school breaks. We'll finally get some lovely, consistent weather that will allow us to take advantage of the splendor of the New England summer. In July, we offer a historical record of the number of bus trips outside Watertown. We'll have a tour with our Zoom tour guide, Marcia, at the Isabella Gardner's Museum and lunch at Sullivan's. We will also be visiting New Zealand and Iran with our Virtual World Trip Series. This month, the Senior Center will continue offering our usual activities virtually and in -person with some changes. You'll note that the Art Class Social sessions have moved to Tuesday afternoons and that the Monday Zoom Art class with Dawn is not on the schedule: no worries -- it will return in September. In July, we will offer Zoom Line Dancing lessons with Bradley Mather, our line dancing instructor, who has been with us for the past two years and will teach through the summer. Another highlight of the July programs is the make-up master class with Susan Regan, our dance trainer, and a musician. Community Toices If you don't like the programs we are presently offering, please join us and help us do it better• Many of us wonder how we can attract more people to our Helen Dempsey programs. Marina, Program Chairperson, Coordinator, and the Volunteer Council on Hging Board Program Group have worked very hard to bring a wide range of interesting programs to the Senior Center and schedule trips away from the Center. We have several excellent exercise programs, something to fit everyone. Yet, it has been hard to grow our attendance since the end of the COVID shutdown. People are getting out much more and are busy with other activities. Our programs are client -driven. We offer them because one or more of our members has suggested/requested them. As activists, we offer many programs relating to health issues, estate planning, local city activities, book club discussions, and regular meetings with our state senator and representative. I have heard from several people who say that our image is that of an "Old People's Home," with doddering, fragile seniors hobbling about. This statement couldn't be further from the truth. Our active membership consists of a group of very intelligent, well-educated people whose lives and careers have been extremely interesting. They are artists, musicians, photographers, craftspeople, teachers, business entrepreneurs, writers, and readers who are now pursuing their avocations and sharing them with others. Most of us are retired, and some are still working part-time. Yes, we have many members now in their late 80's and 90's. Many of them are quite limited physically, but if you take the time to talk to them, you learn about what rich lives they have led. Have you ever read our writeups about our centenarians? They didn't reach 100 by sitting around all their lives, doing nothing. Continued on page 4- PAGE 4 . I will be meeting you at the Watertown Senior Center's Lobby at 3 pm. SHINE Success Story: Medicare One phone call saved a Brookline I senior $581 in drug costs. SHINE "Rose" called SHINE in April to see if she could enroll in a cheaper Medicare Part D drug plan. She was paying a premium of $64.70 a month and was taking nine medications. It turned out that Rose was qualified for Extra Help, a federal program that allowed her to join a drug plan for $0 a month outside of normal enrollment periods. With a few clicks of the keyboard, a SHINE counselor enrolled Rose in the new plan, effective May 1. Had she stayed in her previous plan, her total cost for prescriptions — premiums plus copays —would have been $802. Under the new plan, her total cost will just be the copays. For the remainder of the year, they will total $221. Remember, SHINE volunteers are available year- round. If you think you're overpaying for drug and medical services, make an appointment. You never know, you might save hundreds of dollars. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-243-4636. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name, number and town. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.
