HomeMy Public PortalAbout04-08-1949 341 OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND,INDIANA, FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 1949. The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Richmond, Indiana met in regular session in its office in the City Building in said City, Friday April g, 1949 at 9:00 A.M. o'cl®ck. Mr. H.G. Coleman pretiding with the following members being present: Mr. Ross and Mr. Haworth. the following proceedings were had to wit: The minutes of the previous meeting were dispensed with. Mr. R.C. Richardson appeared before the Board requesting permission to place the proper barricades across the sidewalks of the city while he is cleaning plaques and stbgns for stores with equipment that requires air hose. The re- quest was granted with provision that he contact the Police Dept. when a barricade is to be erected. The acted upon the 'request of the Mayor, to have a clean-city for Easter Sun- day., by advising the Street -Commissioner to make arrangements to have a late trash collection in the business area late Saturaday evening iaefore Easter. On recommendation of the Fire chief, the Board approved the promotion of - Robert Connerton from the rank of a regular fireman to that of Lt. at #4 Hose house as of April 1, 1949. - The Board gave Fire Chief Williams autority to install a new fire alarm:box and system at the Reid Memorial Hospital. . The Fire-Chief advised the Board that the new 750 G.P.M. Pumper had arrived and that a test would be given said pumper in the City of Connerville, Indiana next week. - " - • On recommedation of- the Chief of Police, George Bell and Richard. Mason were promoted from probationary patrolmen to regular patrolmen. Both men have served their required time- of probationary. This to be effective as of April 1,1949. The Board approved the plans and specidications of the Kool Vent Awning Company to install this type of awnings at the stores of Harry Kepler and Frank Peters on South 5th Street. The Board granted permission to John Schnieder to attend a Road School at Purdue University during the 11,12,13 and 14 of April. A petition to reopen an alley 136.4' South of Peacock Road between N.W. 10th and N.W. llth Street was presented to the Board. This alley had been previous closed by Declaratory Res. 44-194+1. This petition waw referred to the Engineer- ing Dept. for consideration. "' The Board approved the request of Mr. A.G. Van Pelt , 628 South 5th Street, with recommendation that said curb be cut on the South G Street side. The petition of Mort Rhoads and Darrel Swisher to cut curb on N. 7th Street was referred to the Engineering Dept. for recommendations. Mr. Geo. Borton and Carlton Commons appeared before the Board requesting per- mission to rough grade South 24th Street from South E Street to Eeeveston Road. This street has been dedicated as a street but hasn't been cutbthrough. The Ioard granted permission to these men with provision that said work is done under the supervision of. the Engineering Dept. of the City. 3t2 Mrs. Edith Gilbert wrote to the Board requesting permission to place a small temp- orary, portable building on the owners lot across the street from the Glen Miller Park entrance on National Road. Mr. Ross advised the Board that this area was in a strictly residential district. The Board gave the Clerk authority to inform Mrs. Gilbert that this request would have to be taken up with the Appeal Board of Zonning. The Board unanimously approved the recom mendation of the Engineering Dept. The Board approved that the following Resolution to Mr. Winfield Urban be made a part of the record of this meeting: RESOLUTION. IN MEMORY OF • Winfield H. Urban, a former City Controller of the City of Richmond, Indiana, who died April 7, 1949. WHEREAS, Death has removed from our midst our worthy citizen and for- mer co-worker Winfield H. Urban, City Controller and former member of the Board of Public Works and Safety. WHEREAS, Mr. Urban was always faithful to his duties as City Control- ler, courteoz.s and efficient. He was also active in all the duties of citizenship and business life of the City. - 343 The Board of Public Works and Safety in regular session assembled de- sire to testify to his worth, and express its deep and sincere regret that he has been removed from his place in the affairs of the City, therefore = BE IT RESOLVED that in the untimely death of Mr. Urban, the City of - Richmond has lost a faithful and eff ecient servant and good citizen, that his good judgement and careful attention will be greatly missed by his former ' co-work rs, be it futher RESOLVED, that the City Officials sineerly sympathize with his family and friends in the great loss the have sustained, and take this means to test- ifying to his many virtues and stainless life as a public official and as a citizen, be it further RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be sent to the family and also entered in the records of the proceedings of the Board of Public Works and Safet. The copy- of the lease between Mr. H.B. Highley and the City of Richmond was referred to the City Attorney to make proper notice for the removing of the building owned by Mr. Highley and on City property. This action is in regards to the property needed for the new bridge over the Whitewater River. The Board allowed claims in the sum if $ 24,S90.S7. There being no further budmess to be brought to the attentiof of the Board, Mr. Ross moved to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Haworth and carried unanimously. Chairman Attest: Cl .
