The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Richmond, Indiana, met in regular session in the office of the Board Friday, January 11 , 1946 at 9:00 A.M. Messrs. S. W. Hodgin, Earl Keisker, and Winfield Urban being present, the following proceedings were had to wit:- I/ The minutes of the preceding meetings were read and approved. Mr. Will Roller, on behalf of the Diamond Clamp Flask Company, and the Natco, appeared before the Board in regard to the condition of the retaining wall at the Gaar Scott Building, asking that the City share some of the expense to be encountered in removing the wall. Messrs . Forest Gartside, representing the Diamond Clamp & Flask Co. , Omar Ryan, representing the Natco, and Lee Ridgeway, engineer called upon by Mr. Gartside, also appeared before the Board and gave testi- mony in regard to conditions pertinent to the wall. Mr. Hodgin recommended, and it was so ordered, that the matter be taken under advisement and a final answer be given just as soon as the Board could come to a decision. Fire Chief Williams advised the board of estimate of 398.20, from the Miller Kemper Co. , plus an additional 10 or ,115 for carpen- try work, for insulating materials to be placed in. No. 3 and No. 4 Hose Houses . Mr. Urban moved, Mr. Keisker seconded, . and it was so ordered that Chief Williams proceed with the purchase of insulation material . Mr. Urban moved, Mr. Keisker seconded, and it was so ordered, that the letter of January 9th, 1946 received from the Indiara Rail- road Company, in regard to delay in delivery of buses , be made a matter - of record. The letter reads as follows : Richmond, Indiana January 9th, 1946 "Hon. John Britton City Building Ri. ±mond-, Indiana Dear John: During the past few weeks , our company has been trying to secure some information regarding the delivery date of our new busses , which prior to the General Motors Strike , was set for arrivalI/ December 15, 1945. Vie now have been advised that even before the G.M. Strike , they were sixty days behind schedule on account of other industries which supplied various -parts for these coaches were either on strike or behind schedule . This condition, plus General Motors Salesmen, estimate that every day they are on strike would prob- ably mean two days delay in filling their orders , and that we should not expect delivery of our coaches, before the middle of 1946 . 6.7 "This is a very pessimistic view to take,. but I thought that you and the people of Richmond should know what happened to the order for new busses that we placed in June of 1945. It is unfortunate that we are delayed at a- time when our present equipment is about worn out. However, I trust that you and the people of Richmond will bear with us, and during the next few months we will do our very best ' to maintain our schedules, and give good service to our patrons . In writing this letter I thought that you would want to give this information to the press . It seems that there is nothing we can do to hurry the thing along, but I sincerely believe that when they do arrive, the people will say they were worth waiting for. Sincerely yours, JLA.pc J. L. Alyea (signed) Division Mgr." The request of Mr. John McCurdy, 220 N. W. -13th Street, for fire protection was referred to Chief Williams as to the need for it . It was also recommended that better lighting on L. ,//2 N. W. 13th Street be provided at the time lights are installed , at the Ball Park. Mr. Urban moved, Mr. Keisker seconded, and it was so ordered that bids for chain at the Sewage Disposal Plant be re-advertised according .to specifications furnished the- Clerk of the Board by Mr. Ross , Supt . of the Sewage Disposal Plant; bids to be received at 9:30 A.M.
