Many of us wonder how we can Helen Dempsey attract more people to our Chairperson, programs. Marina, Program Council on Hging Coordinator, and the Volunteer Program Group have worked very hard to bring a wide range of interesting programs to the Senior Center and schedule trips away from the Center. We have several excellent exercise programs, something to fit everyone. Yet, it has been hard to grow our attendance since the end of the COVID shutdown. People are getting out much more and are busy with other activities. Our programs are client -driven. We offer them because one or more of our members has suggested/requested them. As activists, we offer many programs relating to health issues, estate planning, local city activities, book club discussions, and regular meetings with our state senator and representative. I have heard from several people who say that our image is that of an "Old People's Home," with doddering, fragile seniors hobbling about. This statement couldn't be further from the truth. Our active membership consists of a group of very intelligent, well-educated people whose lives and careers have been extremely interesting. They are artists, musicians, photographers, craftspeople, teachers, business entrepreneurs, writers, and readers who are now pursuing their avocations and sharing them with others. Most of us are retired, and some are still working part-time. Yes, we have many members now in their late 80's and 90's. Many of them are quite limited physically, but if you take the time to talk to them, you learn about what rich lives they have led. Have you ever read our writeups about our centenarians? To have I coverage begin the month of your 65th birthday, you must enroll during the three months prior to your birthday. Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) extends three months past your birthday month, but your effective date will be later than your birthday month. If you don't enroll during your IEP, you may have a lifetime penalty. There is an exception for people still working past age 65. If you are covered through your employer group health plan and there are 20 or more employees, you may delay enrolling in Medicare without penalty. This also applies if you are covered through your spouse's current employment. However, once employment ends, other coverage, such as COBRA or a Health Connector plan, will not prevent the penalty. For further assistance about this or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Program. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health and drug insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-243-4636. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number.
