HomeMy Public PortalAbout03-31-1939 OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF WORKS AND SAFETY JCITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, 'FRIDAY, MARCH 31st , 1938. The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Richmond,. Indiana, met in the office of said Board, Friday, March 31st, 1939 at 9 'clock A.M. Messrs. John R. Britten, Simeon W. Hodgin and - Henry U. Johnson II, being present the following proceedings were i. . had , to-wit : The minutes of the preceeding meeting were approved as read. 7:r. Hodgin stated that the light at the alley on South J Street west of 7th had not been approved as the minutes stated. It was. estimated the cost for installing the light would cost about $100.00. Mr. James Alyea, local manager for the Indiana Rail oad came before the Board asking for a temporary change in the South 12th and E St. route. He suggested that it go North from South E Street on 22nd Street to Reeveston Road, west to 18th Street and South to E Street again. He stated that owing to the construction of the sewer on South 23rd street it was impossible to use the street. Approval was given by the Board. . Mr. Robert Juerling, contractor on the Hudson Building asked permission to close the alley temporarily between 6th & 7th streets on the South side of Main Street'- durinc excavating and sonstruction or-f the. building. This was approved. Mr. Asher Wooley with Bartel, Rohe & Rosa Co stated that his company had delivered a barrel of disinfectant to the former admin- istration which had not been accepted b y the Present one. He stated that if they did not want it his Company would reclaim it. This was agreed to b- y the Board. Mr. Howard Dill of the Water Works Company stated his company did not approve the water main on South West 16th street as formerly recommended. This was to cover about 1500 feet. He stated that there were not enough patrons to justify the investment : Mr. Hodgin stated that the main could run from Main Street south on 16th street to B Street , a fire hydrant to be placed on the north-west corner. This would eliminate the distance to about 600 feet, which was app- roved.. Messrs. Earnest Borradaile, Sam Green and C arl .Davis appeared before the Board in the interest of Soft Ball for the Industrial League: Mr . Hodgin stated that the grading in Clear Creek Park was almost completed and that the present lights on the Glen Miller diamonds could be removed at an estimated cost of about $400.00 but that an entire new installation would be around '12500. 00. It • was suggested by the Committee that bleachers• be constructed and five cents ( 50) be charged per seat . Mayor Britten suggested that season tickets be sold. He also suggested that they organize and the Board would do all they could to make it successful. Mr. William Meerhoff came before the Board asking permission to 'paint the curb in front of his place of business on South 9th St. reserving• a place to park. He stated that the parking in the alley back of his place had made it almost impossible to get up to his 26 place of business. City Attorney Johnson stated that this request was impossible owing to the fact thn t South 9th Street was a State highway and it was under their supervision. The Board received and adopted the contract from the School City for the Public Auditorium. A petition was presented by R. C. Ridenour asking Permission to widen the curb in his drive-way at t5 North 6th street was ate-proved. M:.r. Don Bell appeared before the Board in the interest or the I/ insurance committee. He stated that the insurance policy of William l,00rey on the Glen Miller Golf Course should include the Civil City of Richmond , Indiana. A letter was presented the Board from the Henke Construction Co.. through J. L. Hamilton Architect on Auditorium-Gymnasium stating : "We agree to install revised slab over sewer trench at no additional cost to the Owner. " The Board then read and adopted Resolution No. 13- 1939 . - A letter was presented from the State Tax Beard allowing the request for : 10, 000.00 from the General fund to be spent on W.P.A. projects. Also the sum of 357 . 55 to pay the claim for damages against the City for injuries received. Permission. was granted .for a skating party on North A Street be- tween North 12th & 13th streets the evening of April 13th ; street to be roped oft' for the occasion . Byron Robbins and Brandon Griffis , attorneys appeared before the Board in the interest of Philip Birck. They objected to the temporary closing of the alley running south from Main street between 6th & 7th streets. Mr . Britten stated it' was the usual custom where e-cevating of building was being, done and it was done in the interest of the public. City Attorney Johnson also stated it was within the legal right of the Board to close the alley during the construction of a building. - After bills amounting to 4(/00 , were al16w d, they adjourned. aour Attest :C .Ao.,6 City Clerk. u .
