OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF WORKS
CITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA,
FRIDAY MAY 7 , 1937 .
The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City
of Richmond, Indiana, met in the office of said Board,
Friday May 7 , 1937, at 9 :00 o ' clock A.M. Messrs.
Joseph Y. Walter.mann, Simeon Hodgin and William Kelley,
Jr. being present, the rollowing proceedings were had,
to-wit :
The minutes of the preceeding meeting were approved
as read.
City-Engineer Hodgin reported that in order to give
the lot in Earlham Cemetery tor. E. N. Haas, it would
be necessary for the city toe this lot to the Earlham
Cemetery Association and they in turn to sell the same
to Mr. Haas. The Board decided to drop the entire matter.
Norman Jenkins asked permission to move the ornamental
lights in front of his filling station on South 7th Street,
he agreeing to pay the entire cost of moving the same.
The Board authorized Mr. Jenkins to make arrangements
with the Light Plant for this change.
Dr. Markley of South 7th Street asked permission to
stretch a guy wire to help support a tree in front of
his home.cSofi.e discussionwas had as to the legal right
to do this and the same was referred to Street Commsr.
Burkhardt.
Seigfred Holthouse asked permission to move the bridge
in the rear of their store, this permission was granted
with the instructions to place the same so that there
would be a clearance of 13' 6".
Subscription was taken for "Business Week" the same
to be mailed to the City Clerk and charged to the Board
of Works.
Mrs. Everrett Dawson presented a petition for the
installing of a water main at South 4th Street between
0 and P Streets, a distance of about 400 feet, this
was referred to the City Engineer and the Water Works.
Fire Chief Harry Williams reported that the fire
plug in the lumber yard of the Starr Piano Co. could
be moved since there was no longer any necessity for
the same, account of not having any lumber stored there,
and in the event that lumber was again stored in said
yard, then then fire plug could be replaced.
The Chief also asked for permission to purchase
enough paint to paint the exteriors of Hose Houses
#2-3-4 & 5. Referred to Mr. Hodgin to see Mr. Wentz
for a TWA project for this work.

Only one bid was received for the placing of under
ground service to the Gamewell Building of the Fire
Department , this bid being from Stanley Smith at a
price of $145.00. The same was referred to Mr. Hess
for advice and recommendation.
Discussion was had as the policy of closing the
offices on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Hodgin stated that
he thought that some one should be in the offices to
give out information to the public, it was agreed to
close on the afternoon set by the banks and business
houses. -
Fire Chief Barry Williams complained about the
number of false alarms that were turned in, and stated
Judge Ball had refused to fien violaters on a mis-
demeanor charr-e and- suggested that an ordinance be
prepared fixing a penalty for this offense. The Board
instructed the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance
along these lines .
Claims to the amount of $9 , 769 .37 were allowed,
after which the Board adjourned.
