September 2022 I .9" . .s - % 17 We hope all of you are feeling well after the heat wave in the middle of August and are looking forward to the splendid beauty of the New England Indian Summer at the beginning of September. In September, we will begin slowly bringing back the in -person activities to the Senior Center from cyberspace. Thus, you will notice that Chair Yoga, Tai-Chi, and Thursday morning exercise class are back in the Senior Center. Nevertheless, we will be streaming those in -person classes on Zoom for those clients who work from home. You will notice a temporary change in our shuttle bus schedule: the trips to Stop & Shop were moved to Tuesdays in September. We will continue having bus tours outside of Watertown: we will go to Bell Isle Seafood, Sullivan's, Stoneham Zoo, and Davis Museum at Wellesley University. We are going to resume Bingo sessions every other week on Wednesday mornings. In addition, we will still offer Zoom sessions for some programs, like the World Travel series. Those clients who want to participate in Zoom sessions but don't have the Internet and gadgets are welcome to come to the Center to watch it on our TV or use one of our laptops. With the beginning of the school year, our parking will again be busy in the mornings. This year, we got more parking space: the first row of parking lots facing the Center's entrance is reserved only for the Senior Center's clients. Please have your Senior Parking Permit visible on your vehicle's windshield when parking at the spots designated for the Senior Center. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Senior Center in September! Ye,101- Cewte - Sta f f PAGE 2 . Book Club Zoom and In -person Wednesday, September 14 at 10 am We will be discussing Born Crime, by Trevor Noah. Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. This is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother — a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse. Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories --hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting --weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love. World Travel Series: '4"a Walking Style Guided our to Alfama, Thursday, September 15, 1:30 pm Together, we will explore Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. Al Hammam, the Arabic root word for the hammam, a place for bathing under Islamic rule, is whence the name Alfama originates. We'll learn how the neighborhood got its name, why, and how the Islamic presence in the city, now Portugal's capital, lasted for over 400 years. Next, we will stop at the Portas do Sol viewpoint and learn more about St. Vincent, the Tagus river, and its significance for the town's development. We will learn about St. Anthony's celebrations in June, and our traditional song Fado. ,,im In -Person Smartphone Photography: MI'Intl1"1,,1 I1\ Macro/Close Up Photography, Friday, September 16, at 3 pm Spring, summer, winter, or fall, macro photography opens the door to a wonderful new world of photo opportunities. Melinda, Cory, and I gathered under Judy Fallows's direction. Judy is a OWL F jL School Garden Coordinator at Watertown Public Schools, and she has been taking care of the Q vegetation around the Senior Center I for years. Melinda and Cory, Judie's friends and co-workers, brought mulch and her camera. We worked for about an hour and a half, cleaning up weeds and debris from ' the garden area. Then I hauled . compost from a large pile nearby. p g p Y Armed with gloves, wheelbarrow, composite, and soil, we prepared the garden bed. Then Judy called us over to the roses in pots. She talked about why she chose these three roses — two pink and one a rosy lavender. They were all native to New England and were waiting to be transplanted. While the others weeded and water other parts of the garden, I prepared the area for planting with compost. Then, finally, we put the roses in their holes, mulched each, and set the trellis where it belonged. Every other morning, I come to water the roses".
