HomeMy Public PortalAboutResolution No. 23-095 - Authorizing a Bi-Weekly Community Chess TournamentSponsored by: Commissioner Bass RESOLUTION NO. 23-095 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, AUTHORIZING A BI -WEEKLY COMMUNITY CHESS TOURNAMENT TO BE HOSTED BY COMMISSIONER BASS, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS ($2,000.00) FOR INITIAL EXPENSES AND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($500.00) MONTHLY FOR THE 2022-2023 FISCAL YEAR; AND PROVIDING FOR INCORPORATION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, community events increase the quality of life for residents; and WHEREAS, Chess is known to improve cognitive skills among all age groups; and WHEREAS, hosting a bi-weekly chess tournament will allow attendees to engage in this passionate and exhilarating game; and WHEREAS, the initial cost to purchase supplies shall not exceed Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00). Additional expenditures for the tournament shall not exceed Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) monthly for the remainder of the 2022-2023 fiscal year; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Dr. Sherelean Bass is the sponsor of this Event; and WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that it is in the best interest of the City and its residents to authorize a bi-weekly community chess tournament, to be hosted by Commissioner Bass, in an amount not to exceed Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) for initial expenses and Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) monthly for the remainder of the 2023-2023 fiscal year. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA LOCKA, FLORIDA: SECTION 1. RECITALS ADOPTED. The recitals to the preamble herein are incorporated by reference. SECTION 2. AUTHORIZATION The City Commission of the City of Opa-Locka hereby authorizes a bi-weekly community chess tournament, to be hosted by Commissioner Bass, in an amount not to exceed Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) for initial expenses and Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) monthly for the remainder of the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Resolution No. 23-095 SECTION 3. SCRIVENER'S ERRORS. Sections of this Resolution may be renumbered or re -lettered and corrections of typographical errors, which do not affect the intent of this Resolution may be authorized by the Interim City Manager, following review by the City Attorney, without need of public hearing, by filing a corrected copy of same with the City Clerk. SECTION 4. EFFECTIVE DATE This Resolution shall take effect upon the adoption and is subject to the approval of the Governor or Governor's Designee. Hosting a bi-weekly chess tournament will allow attendees to engage in this passionate and exhilarating sport. The initial cost to purchase supplies shall not exceed $2,000, whereas additional expenditure for this event shall not exceed $500 monthly. Commissioner Bass is the sponsor of this event. Financial Impact - $2,000 will be charged to the Parks & Recreation Special Events budget, 72-572403, which has an available balance of $53,467 with the cost of each event being charged to the Commission Special Events budget, 10-572403, which has $25,799 available. Proposed Action: It is recommended the City Commission of the City of Opa-locka approves a bi-weekly community chess tournament to be hosted by Commissioner Bass in an amount not to exceed $2,000 for initial expenses and $500 monthly.
