Educational Project in Rwanda with Jane
O'Connor
Wednesday, November 2 at 2 pm
Following her retirement, Jane began
working to promote quality educational
opportunities for underserved and economically
challenged girls in Boston. In 2005 Jane was invited
to join a group of philanthropic women from
Boston who were interested in developing girls'
education in Rwanda, a country in south-central
Africa devastated by a horrific Genocide in 1994.
As a result, the Maranyundo Girls' School in
Nyamata, Rwanda, opened its doors in 2008 with
sixty students and has grown to become the
premier girls' school in the country, serving a
resident population of over four hundred students.
Building and growing this school have been a labor
of love, and Jane is happy to share this experience
with the Watertown Senior Center members and
guests.

Hybrid Book Club
Wednesday, November 9 at 10 am
We will be discussing By the Book, by
Jasmine Guillory. Isabelle is completely
lost. When she first began her career in
publishing after college, she did not
expect to be twenty-five, still living at home, and
one of the few Black employees at her publishing
house. Overworked and underpaid, constantly
torn between speaking up or stifling herself, Izzy
thinks there must be more to this publishing life.
So when she overhears her boss complaining
about a beastly high -profile author who has failed
to deliver his long-awaited manuscript, Isabelle
sees an opportunity to prove her worth and finally
get the recognition she deserves. But Izzy quickly
finds out she is in over her head. Beau Towers is
not some celebrity lightweight writing a tell -all
memoir. He is jaded and withdrawn and —it turns
out —just as lost as Izzy. But despite his
standoffishness, Izzy needs Beau to deliver, and
with her encouragement, his story begins to spill
onto the page. They soon discover they have more
in common than either of them expected, and as
their deadline nears, Izzy and Beau begin to realize
there may be something there that wasn't there
before.

Community `Voices
r
Chgi.cO WC Make
We spend a lot of our time
exploring the many options open
to us as seniors. Some options are
appropriate for some people, some are not. Some
seniors live alone, some live with others, and that
makes a difference.
A recent experience helped me to see that it is all
about CHOICES. My cousin received a cancer
diagnosis and was told by her oncologist that there
was only one course of treatment that would work
for her. She felt very boxed in and decided to get a
second opinion. The second doctor offered her three
options, one of which was the original one. After
weighing the pros and cons of each treatment, she
decided on the treatment suggested by the first
oncologist, but this time she was coming at it from a
very different angle. She had choices and this was
her decision. Instead of starting her cancer
treatments begrudgingly, she started on a positive
note, knowing that she had made her own informed
decision as to what she believed was the best
available treatment for her.
That made me think about all the options that we as
seniors have. Making one choice often means giving
up another one. If we make the wrong choice, we
usually can change course and make a different
decision. If this is not possible, then we have to
re -think our situation and move on with what
options we now have.
This is more difficult for an older person, because
many of our options depend on what we are
physically or mentally able to do. It is important for
us to make good choices while we are able to do so.
If we become ill or disabled, we may find our choices
limited and, even worse, someone else may be
making those decisions for us.
Things like: When do I give up driving? Where do I
want to live as I become more physically challenged?
What kinds of activities do I want to keep on doing
for as long as I can? There are some wonderful
programs/workshops about navigating the realm of
growing older, but sometimes just sitting down with
a group of friends and having some honest
discussions about "where do we go next?" is just as
helpful.

When anyone asks what I've been doing since the
COVID pandemic began, my answer is: Zooming my
way to entertainment, education, and engagement
with others on my laptop. So have you tried Zoom to
add fun to your life by experiencing new places, peo-
ple, and things?
If you're reluctant to attend in -person meetings and
want to avoid bad weather, you can sit comfortably
at home and be amused by making Zoom your
friend. If you haven't already done so, set up a free
account at Zoom.com. Then, when you register for a
Zoom online program, you just click on the link in the
email you receive and you're ready to have fun
virtually.
Admittedly, I was initially timid about setting up a
Zoom account but following the directions to do so
was easy. If you need help, our Senior Center or the
Watertown Public Library provide assistance setting
up your electronic devices. My first-hand experience
is that Zoom virtual events enrich my life, and I
honestly believe it's what got me through the worst
of the pandemic's isolation.
Even now that the worst of the pandemic is behind
us and more in -person events are available, Zoom
supplies programs on subjects such as travel, art,
history, architecture, music, science, nature,
biography, and author talks. Many of these programs
are given by presenters who would not be able to or
would not choose to do in -person programs.
My favorite source for free Zoom events is the
Tewksbury Public Library that partners with other
Massachusetts libraries to offer virtual programs that
begin at 11 a.m. or 7 p.m. Begin your entertainment
journey by checking out the "Virtual" events on its
calendar at: https://www.tewksburypl.org/home/
pages/calendar. For those who don't want to use
Zoom, I can recommend Google Arts and Culture at:
https://artsandculture.google.com/. Try either or
both; you won't be disappointed.
Jayne was very kind to compile a list of her
favorite online resources for anybody who is
exploring the world remotely. Call or email us to get it.

Medicare Open Enrollment ends
December 7 "' Don't miss your chance
to change plans -SHINE can help!
It's extremely important to review your options
EVERY year to make sure you have the plan that
works best for you for next year. Some Medicare
regulation changes related to the Inflation
Reduction Act will go into effect for 2023, so it is
more important than ever to review your options.
Call your Senior Center and ask for a SHINE
appointment. At the time of your appointment, you
should have your:
Medicare account Username and Password (if
you have an account)
Medicare card # and other drug/health
insurance cards and benefit information
Prescription drug list (dosage, quantity,
frequency)
Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential
counseling on all aspects of health insurance to
anyone on Medicare. For Medicare related matters
(other than an appointment), call 1-800-243-4636.
Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave
your name, town, and number. A volunteer will call
you back, as soon as possible.
