HomeMy Public PortalAbout20180314 - Center School Re-Use Advisory Team - Minutes1 Center School Re-Use Advisory Team Wednesday, March 14, 2018 6:00 PM Hopkinton High School, 90 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, MA MINUTES Members Present: Richard Flannery, Chair, Kenneth Weismantel, Vice Chair, Laura Barry, John Pavlov Members Absent: Darlene Hayes Liaisons Present: Michael Auen (Hopkinton Historic District Commission) Meeting called to order at 6:06. 1. Community Input There was no community input. 2. Minutes Mr. Weismantel moved to approve the Minutes of the January 24, 2018 meeting. The motion was seconded by Mr. Auen. The Team discussed corrections to the minutes then voted unanimously in favor of accepting the minutes as corrected. Mr. Weismantel moved to approve the Minutes of the February 3, 2018 meeting. Mr. Pavlov seconded. The team discussed corrections to the minutes for 2/3/18, then voted unanimously to approve as corrected. 3. Review of Public Forum Mr. Flannery opened the discussion by commenting that the public participation at the forum was very good. About 35 people attended and provided good feedback. Overall, it appeared that residents preferred retaining the building for future municipal and community use. The team discussed some the ideas and feedback from residents that attended the forum. It was noted that some residents stated at the forum that they would like to see the process move more quickly. Mr. Weismantel commented that it seemed that not all of the participants understood the instructions for the forced rankings exercise. 4. Review of Responses to Survey Over 350 responses to the Survey were received (see summary). The responses to the survey reflect highest support for municipal and community uses such as: Community Center/Youth Center, Parks & Rec, Gym, and School and Town offices. Mr. Auen asked if it could be determined how much space would be needed for some of the suggested uses. It was noted that the town is preparing a study of needs for the town, and that study will be useful to the Team. Mr. Wesmantel asked if Parks and Recreation Department/Board had submitted a response to the Department and Board/Committee Questionnaire, and Mr. Flannery confirmed that it has not been received. Mr. Weismantel made a motion for the Team, through its Chair, to send a letter to Parks & Rec requesting it submit a response to the Questionnaire regarding the Parks & Rec Department and Committee’s interest in using the Center School Property. Mr. Pavlov seconded, and the motion was approved unanimously. 2 5. Review of Center School Transition meeting on 2/6/18 Mr. Flannery and Mr. Weismantel attended the Center School Transition meeting on Feb. 6, 2018. The Elementary School Building Committee is planning on transferring the property on July 1, 2018. Mr. Weismantel updated the Team on the process, including the how the school will be cleared of furniture and items. This will occur as soon as school ends. The next Transition meeting will be March 20, 2018. 6. Next Steps in Process & Future Agenda items The Team discussed next steps, including finalizing criteria, planning and scheduling a second public forum, and inviting groups that expressed interest in using the space to upcoming CSRAT meetings. Also, the Town’s needs study will be helpful to the Team. The Team scheduled the next meetings for March 28, April 11, and April 25. Mr. Weismantel moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Mr. Pavlov and the Team voted unanimously in favor.
