VILLAGE CLERK
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OP A COUNTY WIDE CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT AND REDUCE
VIOLENCE WITHIN THE COUNTY OF WILL
Recognizing that violence is a complex and pervasive public health problem resulting from multiple casual factors
including poverty, unemployment, racism, sexism, alcohol and other drug abuse, frequent exposure to violence in the
home and community, wide spread access to firearms, and sensationalized media portrayals, among other causes; and
Recognizing that violence among youth, in families, at work, and as entertainment has reached unacceptable levels
nationally and in Will County; and
Recognizing violence prevention is a community concern and finding solutions to violence relies on involvement
among people representing the cultural, racial, ethnic, and economic diversity of Will County; and
Believing that Will County parents, youth and leaders in the public health, mental health, substance abuse, education,
justice, business, media, clergy, and other sectors recognize the need to come together to raise their voices against the
increasing violence in our County; and
Believing that these Will County citizens are not only raising their voices, but working in coalition to provide a
sustained, year-round, community-based approach to identifying, understanding, and solving the complex problems
that result in violence driven fear and bloodshed in our County; and
That the Will County Violence Prevention Coalition urges you to work together to change the image of violence in
society from acceptable to despised and without tolerance. Each one of us can start by:
1. Controlling our own anger and provide positive role modeling.
2. Taking responsibility for preventing and reducing the amount of violence by providing peaceful conflict
resolution, especially when dealing with youth.
3. Eliminating guns from our homes or keeping them unloaded and securely stored and locked.
4. Assuming the responsibility that we are all accountable for the fact that a level of violence has become acceptable
in our homes and communities.
S. Agreeing to allow our signing of this resolution to be publicly acknowledged so as to encourage other signatures.
