The Committee of Public Improve-
ments of the Commercial Clueb who have had under consideration
the matter of street lighting, in keeping with a conference
with the Board of Public Jorks, has endeavored the past week
to ascertain the sentiment of the public with reference to the
kind of system they desire to have installed and how it was to
be paid for.
In order that unbiased views might be had it was de-
cidod to submit four nueeti one to be answered on return postal
cards. These were addressed to members of the Commercial Club-
1 - Do you favor having the lights placed on brackets on the
street car trolley poles?
2 - Do you favor having lights placed on columns and the wires
under ground?
3 - For ornamental lighting in business districts, do you favor
acse:,sing adjoining property?
4 - In the business districts to you favor the Light Plant Pay-
ing for the lamps and 15,0 of installation, the ad cining proper-
ty the balance?
277 persons returned replies and the tabulation of these answers
shored the following result:- 8 were non-com7ita1, nq favored
brackets, 240 favored ornamental poles, 18f favored adjoining
property paying part, city the remainder, 140 business men in
business districts favored ornamental poles.
The data shows an overwhelming majority for ornamental
poles & underground wires as against the brackets & overhead
wiring. In the light of this information we recommend that
brackets on trolley poles be not used for ornamental lighting
in the business district, and ornamental Poste with under-^'ound
wiring be installed.

make no authoritative recoi-:mendation on this question. The ro-

favor of this p1nn, and an inspection of the cards revothat
of tho 15 members of the Board of Directors aho are at present
in the city, 14 answered in favor of property assessment, and
one was non-commital. This would clearly indicate.what actiois
