Thursday, March .7 , 1318
Mr. Johnson brought ur the matter of having the Street Depart-
ment under the supert-ision of the City Engineer. Mr. Peitz
moved that the City Lngineer. and_ Street ';ommissioner work to-
.-ether and Street Commissioner get his instructions from the
City engineer, seconded by Mr. Taylor , so ordered.
Mr. T . K. McKinney tendered his resignation as a member of the
fire Department. Mr. Taylor moved tha t r'. K. McKinney' s res-
ignation as a member of the .Fire Lepartmentbe accepted , seconded.
by Mr. Peitz , so ordered.
The Board. appointed Wm. Goehner, who had been working without
an appointment to succeed hi.-self, Chas . Brown to fill the
vacancy caused by Mr. McKinney(7s resignation, and Elmer Long-
streth to take Wm. Pippen' s -riace• as an extra Iran . All other
members of the Fire Department who /handed in their resignations
were reappointed by the Bcard.
Claims for the amount of sli5,118 .09 were allowed and ordered
paid.

The Board approved various pay rolls ur to and including
February 28 , 1918 .
The board then adjourned.

The Board of Public Works of the City of i i_ chr and , Indiana
met in regular session at the office of the said Board ,
Monday, March 11, 1918 at 9 :00 o ' clock, A. M. All of the,
members of said Board being present , Messrs . Johnson, Taylor
and Feltz . The following proceedings were had to-wit : -

The minttes of previous meeting read and were approved .
The Cletk read letters in regard to cancelling the advertise-
ment s for bids for new road Oiler, from the Studebaker Co.
and the Austin ?'western toad Machinery Co. , The Board
ordered these placed on file.

Monday, March 11, 1.918
- A letter was read by the Oleri;t from the Municipal League
of Indiana . Mr. Pelts moved that this be held .over to the
meeting of the Board , Thursday, seconded by Mr. Taylor,
so ordered. .
The Board met to hear all persons int ere st ed in or whose
property is affected by improvement Of al ley between South
2d and 3d Street running from South A Street north to the
first alley south of main street , thence east to 3d 'street
and west to 2d street -by making a ceme et roadway in said
alley under improvement ilesolution no . 545-1918 . After
hearing all persons interested who appeared and a remon-
strance signed by a majority of the resident property owners
on motion of ;+lr. Pelts and seconded by Mr. Taylor, the Board
rescinded said resolution.
Mr. Johnson brought up the matter of glass broken in street
car windows and falling on the street . son Mr. Johnso
n

ommended that l,ir. Gorden be instructed to rave men clean
up this glass along the car tracks. There was no fur the r
action taken on this .
Lir. Johnson brought up the matter of buying red lant erns •
for the . `ire -Department and Police _Department for use for •
Public Safety. . Mr. Pelts moved that Mr. Miller buy two
dozen lanterns and use his judgment as to the kind, wanted,
seconded by Lr. Taylor , so ordered .
A petition was presented by the clerk for improvement of
both sides of North "A" street from North 2d street to
North 3d street and on North 2d street from the south line
of North A street where the C . w 0. railroad crosses North
2d street , for the paving of said street between the points
named with one of the followi ng kinds of pavement ;.- Bri ck ,
Concrete, Woodblock or Lituminous macadam and c one eete base .
Also constructing cement curb apes gutter , signed by the
Nlefoth-Ni ewoehner Co . and the Swayne -lob- nson Co.
_Feltz moved that th5s petition be referred to the City En-

gineer for plans and. specifications , seconded. by Mr. Taylor ,
so ordered. .

Dillon in regard to c •angtng equipment on elevat ors , Mr.
v' Dillon suggested that the amity Attorney draw up ordinance-
compelling owners to install safety ay_pliances on elevators . •
Mr. Johnson moved. that the amity attorney be instructed to

Mayor N. Zimmerman brought up the matter refe rred to him
• by Mr. Hayes in regard to improving -North 3d street . It
was left to Mr. immeri:,aan tc get a petition from Mr. Hayes •
to present to council. The Board also brought up the
matter of widening the street at North Sd and "D" street .
A MTh Pelts moved. that the - City Attorney be instructed to
look_ into the matter of widening this street , seconded by
Mr. Taylor, so ordered.. • .

The Board took up the matter of /3ranting permission for use
Of lot near North 15th and "H • street for Garden purpose ,
- for which Mr. .-.brims and Mr. i1rn. Suttle applied and on which
Mr . ;Tuttle had put up a deposit of 44. 50 with 'the City -n-
gineer for this privilege. The Board decided to grant
use of thislot to Mr. Abrams and Mr. Suttle°s money be re-
funded to him.
T. r. Wei drier appeared before the Board in regard to Cash Street
Fund being from q�110U.00 to 41200.00 short and v,-hi ch was handed

down to him from the former treasurer. He recommended
to Indianapolis and have this straightened out by the State
' Board of Accounts. Er. Peitz moved that ;.-r. Weidner go to
Indianapolis and take this natter up v, ith the State Board
of Accounts and get same straightened out , seconded by Mr.
Taylor , so ordered .
Mr . Murphy appeared before the Board and brought up the matter
or having the city Plow small lots free of charge to needy
people 'in order to mad: e comDeti ti on and to hold the -cri ce of
plowing down. The Board advised Mr. Murphy they would do
:that they could in this matter.
Er. Lillon took up With the Board the matter of moving old
shed from the old right Plant to the new plant for a store
shed. T.-=r. Johnson recommended that this shed be placed
on concrete. base .
Mr.Davis took up. v;ith the Board the advisability of hiring a
general utility man. After quite a discussion the Board
• decided that a man of this kind should be paid 2O.00 Der
week but the Board referred this to the 'ity Engineer to
see if he could get such a man before taking any action in
the matter .
Mr. Malsby appeared before the Board end asked permission to
barricade North A. street 'between 10th and llthl street from
7 : 30 to 9 : 30 on Monday nights for drill practice of the home
guards. lie also requested the loan of barricade -poles and
red lights , from the street department. Mr. Peltz moved:
• that - r. Malsby° s request be grant ed, seconded by 1•-r. Taylor ,
sc ordered.
Mr . Johnson brought up the matter of water backing up in the
alley on South 'hest 3d . street and requested 4iamerman ,
Mr . Davis and the Board to inv esti gc,..te this after the meeting .
Mr. 2immerrnan brought up the matter of placing a storm sewer
on North 7th street . After some discussion Mr. Peitz moved
that the L,ity .Lngineer draw up Plans and specifications for
a storm sewer on North 7th street , seconded by Mr. Taylor ,
so ordered.

Mr. Johnson moved that the Board recommend to Council to
vote favorably on the neti.tion of firemen in regard to in-
crease in salaries , seconded by Mr. -aylor , so ordered.

Johnson moved that this be referred to the city .Lnineer

Peltz, so ordered .
The Clerk again presented the letter from the Municipal

League of Indiana . The Board referred this to be read to
Council .
The Clerk read a letter from the _.iati ons.l :Surety Company,
stating that they had cancelled Bond no . 784, 065 of M. V
Henley for Gasoline Lispenser at 1207 Main street. it was
moved by Mr. Feltz that this be referred to the City Attorney -
to have Mr. Bethard , now occupying this buildin , to furnish
bond and contract , seconded b r Mr. Taylor , so ordered.
