A special meeting was held to -day at 4.00 p.m. and was attended by Mayor Gamble and Councilmen Horovitz,Espy,Farr,Cann,Town attorney McIntyre and also Messrs, F.P.Haar, F. H.Haar, George D. Cohn and E.B.Iz1ar. The Mayor informed those present that his purpose in calling this special ;session was with a view to having a thorough discussion of the electrice service situation as now confronts the Town and also with a view to arriving atsome remedy that will permit of getting a more efficient and reliable system of electric service on the island, - -- the electric plant operated by the Town for the past four: years has put the Town in debt for approximately $ 17000.00 and the service rendered has never been satisfactory-- the Savannah Electric and Power Co . ,have been handling the/ er extending their lines to , Tybee for the past two lzyears and have finally decided that the cost of extending thisrsystem over such a long distance is too much for them to undertake at this time, they estimate that it will cost around $ 76000.00 to do this work, they have agreed that,if the Town will stand part of the cost of this job, that is the cost of placing the system on the island from Lazaretto Creek on to the south end ,(22000.00) they are willing to make the proposed extension, with the proviso that if this service is wanted for the coming season it would be necessary to have an immediate answer - -- the Mayor suggested that as this was probably the best opportunity that Tybee has has had to avail itself of an electric service that will be reliable and which will permit of continous service all through the yearhe thought it would be well to take advantage of it--- to do so would necessitate the issuance of bends to the amount of $ 22000.00 and as it would take at least three mo rths to get an election .through and get the bonds sold, it is necessary that some way be arrived at now to realize this Monet at once, and he suggested that 15 or 20 of the property owners on Tybee endorse a note that could be negotiated through one of the local banks for $ 22000.00 turn this money over to the S.E.& P.Co., as needed, the endorsers to be protected by the issuance of bonds to cover this amount. Mr.Cann - -- said that if the project goed thru the Town will have street lights twelve months in the year, that it was a great oppor- tunity property owners should not pass up, it woull increase prop- erty values, the present lighting system is no good and it is very essential that good service be had. Mr.Izlar - -- wanted to know if those who had private plans would be compttled to use S.E. &.P.Co.,service,he was informed it was not compulsory, .also wanted to know if present wires in ,biildings could be used with S.E.P.Co.,service,he was told, yes. Mr.Cann - -- one of direct benefits of S.E.P.Co coming to Tybee would permit of the unlimitd use of electric power as they would use Alternating Current, which would permit the use of any piece of electrical apparatus used in Savannah homes, the present plant has never been satisfactory to the Town,he said that while the occas sion p ,esente:1 itself he wanted to say that the Tybee Beach C ., was allways interested in any project that held to build up Tybee because it in turn would help them, - -- the present indebtedness of the Town was not due to extravagance but to making permanent
