MISSION STATEMENT: To support and advocate for older adults and their families by providing
programs, services and resources that promote independent living and quality of life.
Senior Centers are the Masters of Aging!
September is National Senior Center Month!
This year, senior centers have grown a great deal – probably more

fitness classes or social activities, senior centers continue to be the
experts in their communities on aging. Stop in to talk to us and pick
up our newsletter to see all that we offer. It’s packed with lots of
information and things to do!
Welcome Mary King,
Our new Part-time COA Outreach Coordinator!
We are pleased to announce that Mary King has joined our COA
Outreach Team to advocate for and provide our seniors with social
services resources. Mary has an extensive background in mental

Chinese Medicine concepts for healing and
vitality. During better weather we meet out-

Qi Gong
Tuesdays 9:00 – 10:00am FREE
Qi Gong is a form of exercise that dates
back 3000 years and is not a martial art.
The forms used in this class are therapeutic,
involving slow, repetitive movements which
incorporate meditation, deep breathing and
visualization. Many of the movements can
be done while sitting. Qi is energy we use
and which needs to be replaced with fresh
Qi. The movements deal with our meridians
to relieve and support various organs. We
meet at the Brewster COA and at Drummer
Boy Park (warmer weather permitting). Our
participants enjoy the social aspect of these
meetings as well as the physical benefits.
Contact our instructor, Ray DiPietro, if you
would like to reserve a spot. We look for-
ward to meeting you!
To register for the class, please email
Ray at rayvector@hotmail.com
or call him at 508-246-4486.

Looking for Something Interesting and Productive to Do?
Now that summer is winding down and visitors to your home are becom-
ing more scarce, it’s a good time to think about volunteering a few hours of
your time to a great organization. The Friends of Brewster Elders have
several interesting, fun and productive opportunities for you to consider.
One is to become a board member where you would help craft the organi-
zation’s future, after all, change is afoot in Brewster and the FOBE has its eye on the development of a community center.
Once on the board, there are lots of activities to get involved with and we’re always looking for fresh ideas for fun events,
such as the trip to Cape Symphony for the holiday show and other trips this fall. The board meets only once a month for
about an hour and a half; additional commitment is what you make it! No pressure.
Another fun way to volunteer is to become a regular or a substitute at Sea Captains’ Thrift Shop. The thrift shop is the main
revenue source for the Friends. Volunteers repeatedly mention how they enjoy working with the customers and their fellow
sales staff. A full-time position is only 3 hours a week – chair and interesting conversations supplied! Subs fill in for those
3-hour slots when a full-timer can’t make it. Volunteers are treated to a lovely luncheon at the end of the year, in addition to
the mid-year luncheon for all volunteers. You don’t need any retail experience, just a welcoming personality!
Contact us at www.friendsofbrewsterelders.org or find us on Facebook! You can also call us at 508-385-2881!

Outreach Notes
Outreach is available for help with a variety of subjects: Fuel Assistance, SNAP Assistance, Emergency Buttons, Homecare Assistance,
Medical Equipment, Elder Services, and referrals of all types. For help with any of these, please contact the Outreach Office at
508-896-2737.
SHINE Notes
Each year thousands of Medicare beneficiaries reach a gap in their Medicare prescription drug plan that is often referred to
as the “donut hole”. If you reach that gap, you will see your prescription drug costs increase dramatically! Don’t let this hap-
pen to you! Prescription Advantage can help. Prescription Advantage is a state-sponsored program that supplements your
Medicare drug plan to fill the gap. For more information about Prescription Advantage, call MassOptions at 1-800-243-4636, Monday
through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, or visit www.Prescriptionadvantagema.org.
It’s Almost Time for Open Enrollment!
The annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period is October 15 - December 7 each year. It is important to review your health and prescrip-
tion coverages during this time to ensure that you have the most cost-effective plans for 2022. Each year, Medicare plans can change
premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and even prescription formularies (the list of drugs covered). Often, these changes are significant.
Medicare Advantage Plans (HMOs and PPOs) often add and/or drop primary and specialty physicians, skilled nursing facilities and
hospitals, so these potential changes are worthy of your attention at this time of year; the only time during the year when you are
allowed to make changes.
Please contact the Brewster COA at 508-896-2737 any time after September 15 to make an appointment for Open Enrollment, as we
anticipate high demand. You will need to bring your Medicare card, a complete list of prescription drugs with dosages, and your insurance
cards to the appointment. In some cases, appointments may be done via phone.

Summer Wind-down with Skin Checks
As the summer season winds down and the tan lines fade, it is the ideal time to examine your skin for moles or other suspicious spots.
Cumulative sun exposure causes mainly basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, while episodes of severe blistering sunburns can
cause melanoma later in life. It is often misunderstood that a sunburn itself causes cancer, when in fact it is the overexposure to the
dangerous ultraviolet radiation that damages skin cells, weakening them and creating the opportunity for cancer to form. A sunburn is
simply a symptom that highlights this skin damage. Whenever your skin is exposed to UV light, it reacts by producing more melanin-
increased skin pigment or, more commonly, a tan. To perform a self-assessment skin check, experts recommend using a handheld mirror
to visualize those hard to reach locations, and having adequate lighting. Learning to spot the early warning signs and being vigilant about
changes in your skin could be lifesaving. Report changes in color, texture, size, or shape/ABCDE’s of skin monitoring-asymmetry, border,
color, diameter, evolving, to your primary care doctor or dermatologist. If recommended by your medical professional, inquire with your
local Council on Aging about upcoming Cape Cod Health Care skin cancer screening clinics offered.

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“While we have time, let us do good.”
Saint Francis of Assisi
It’s 5:30am on another hot and foggy July morning, and I have
brought my MacBook Air out to the patio to put together this month’s
PD. At this hour the smells are fresh, the birds are happy and I see
that the rabbits are enjoying my newly planted hostas. Each morn-
ing at this time I walk out to the end of the driveway, say “good
morning” to my neighbor who is on his morning walk, and wave to
the news girl who is driving by delivering today’s papers. It’s kind of
my early morning routine akin to major league ballplayers who go
up to home plate and ultimately satisfies an itch.
I have already watched the morning news, which was not much
different than yesterday. Our primary concern seems to be focused
on green energy and the rising seas, but we’re still building at the
water’s edge. Go figure. There is a lead story about an armed
bystander who killed the shooter at the Greenwood Park Mall in
Greenwood, Indiana. On the human interest side there are viral
stories of people helping strangers pay for groceries inspiring other
acts of kindness. We all love those stories and I’m sure there are
many more of them that just do not get published. SHAME!
I’m on my second cup of coffee enjoying the sights and sounds
and waiting patiently for the temps to hit 90 for the third day in a row
making it a genuine and authentic heat wave. The bird baths have
dutifully been filled with fresh water, but their activity has slowed as
they seek a shady spot to spend the day.
If you happen to be in my neighborhood at 5:30am one morning
and you see some old guy wandering around his driveway, that
would be me, so feel free to stop in for a cup of coffee and some
chatter. Perhaps we can solve the world’s problems….sans politics
& religion. Bring your own creamer. Joanie Carfora and I drink our
coffee black. BTW, can you tell I felt like “Rambling” today?

Senior Swim at Brewster Green is Back!
We are so grateful to the new management team at Brewster Green for
allowing our seniors to participate in Senior Swim every Friday from
10:00am to 12:00noon, beginning on Friday, October 14. There is a fee
of $1.00 per swim, payable to the COA and collected through an honor
system (stop by once a month to pay).
To be eligible to swim, you must first come to the Senior Center to regis-
ter, sign a waiver and regulation form. You will receive a list of the resort’s
rules at that time. It is very important that all participants adhere to Brew-
ster Green’s rules to make it a positive experience for all.
In addition, the resort reserves the right to cancel Senior Swim during
holiday periods when their paying guests are in town, such as Thanksgiv-
ing Week, Christmas Week and New Year’s Week, and other holiday
weeks as needed. Happy Swimming!
