Pulido, City Manage Via: Mark Persico, Communi Developmen-,tDtDirector .� By: Bryan Ariizumi, Public Safety Officer �- SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF STREET CLOSURE OF OAK AVENUE FOR THE OAK AVENUE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL PROMOTION CEREMONY RECOMMENDATION: The City Council is requested to approve the temporary street closure of Oak Avenue on June 20, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the Oak Avenue Intermediate School Promotion Ceremony. BACKGROUND: 1. On June 1, 2010, the City Council approved Oak Avenue Intermediate's request to close Oak Avenue for their Promotion Ceremony on June 17, 2010. 2. On May 17, 2011, the City Council approved Oak Avenue Intermediate's request to close Oak Avenue for their Promotion Ceremony on June 16, 2011. 3. On May 15, 2012, the City Council approved Oak Avenue Intermediate's request to close Oak Avenue for their Promotion Ceremony on June 14, 2012. 4. On April 29, 2013, Lawton Gray, the Principal of Oak Avenue Intermediate School, submitted a letter to Public Safety Officer Bryan Ariizumi requesting approval to close a portion of Oak Avenue for their Promotion Ceremony on June 20, 2013. ANALYSIS: Staff received a letter from Oak Avenue Intermediate School Principal, Lawton Gray, requesting a temporary street closure on Oak Avenue between Emperor Road and City Council May 21, 2013 Page 2 Camino Real on June 20, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for their eighth grade promotion ceremony. Residents in the affected area will be notified in writing by Oak Avenue Intermediate School about the temporary street closure. A reminder notice will also be given to the affected residents two to three days before the street closure. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies will be hired by the school to secure the perimeters of the street closure and to assure the safety of the participants and residents. City Traffic Engineer Yunus Rahi has approved the street closure and required signage for the closure. If approved by the City Council, City staff will deliver the temporary traffic signs on Thursday, June 20 and will retrieve them on Friday, June 21. CONCLUSION: The City Council is requested to review and approve the street closure request for the Oak Avenue Intermediate School Promotion Ceremony on June 20, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. FISCAL IMPACT: This item does not have an impact on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2012-13 City Budget. To assure the community is aware, we will do the following: 1. Residents in the area of closure will be notified in writing by Oak Avenue. 2. Los Angeles County Sheriff s Deputies will be hired to secure the perimeters and assure the safety of the participants and residents 4. Street access will remain open for both Emperor Avenue and Camino Real 5. Parents may go north on Oak from Emperor to park at Temple City High School for the ceremony.
