HomeMy Public PortalAbout08-03-1953 11.1- MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, SERVING AS A COMMITTEE IN CHARGE OF THE OPERATION OF THE MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC LIGHTING AND POWER PLANT. MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 1 53 The Common Council of the City of Richmond, Indiana, serving as a committee in charge of the operation of the Municipal Electric Lighting and Power Plant, met in regular session in the Council Chambers in the City Hall in said City, Monday, August 3, 1953, at the hour of 7: 00 IIo' clock P.M. (CDST) . Councilman Tracy, Vice-Chairman, presiding with the following members being present: Messrs. Alkire, Baldwin, Law, Kettelforder, Marino, Salzarulo and Youngflesh. Councilman Eastman being absent. The following proceedings were had, to-wit: On motion duly made, seconded and carried the minutes of the previous meeting were dispensed with. . Councilman Alkire recommended that the General Manager check the need for street lighting on Reller, Russell, Gardner and Laird Streets and Cri recommend his findings to this committee. --4 `==' A petition was received from the West Side Lumber Company, 310 N.W. F Street requesting a street light. This was referred to a committee composed of Councilmen Baldwin, Kettelforder and Tracy to investigate. Mr. Beck reported that a study had been made of five locations on and near N.W. 5th and Indiana Avenue for the purchase of land for a new sub-station. Mr. Beck recommended the purchase of the vacant lot on N.W. 5th Street (belonging to Mrs. Blanche Austerman) for the proposed new sub-station. This lot can be purchased for 41, 200. 00 and, of several locations investigated, is the best, site for this installation. Councilman Youngflesh moved that the City Attorney be authorized to prepare an ordinance for the transfer of 1,200. 00 from the funds of the Light Plant for which the Board of Works can make the purchase; II seconded by Councilman Alkire, and on voice vote was unanimously carried, . . Councilman Law gave a report from figures that he had secured from the Tax Research Bureau .on the earnings of the Light Plant since 1941. It was his opinion that the taxpayers of the city should have an increase in dividends which could be paid from the earnings without being detrimental to the program of enlargement of the present .plant, Councilman Law moved that beginning August 1, 1953 the sum of S4.0, 000. 00 per month be set aside as dividend to the City of Richmond for the year 1955 which would be 4480, 000. 00 for the year. Councilman Marino seconded this motion. The chairman said that a call of the roll would be taken 9n the motion, all in favor vote aye, those not in favor vote nay. The following vote was recorded: Ayes, Councilmen Law, Marino and Salzarulo. Nayes, Councilmen Alkire, Baldwin, Kettelforder, Tracy and Youngflesh. Absent, Eastman. The chairman announced the vote 3 ayes, 5 nayes and one absent and declared the motion not carried. Councilman Law reported that he would be glad to prepare the report he has for any member desiring same. Councilman Alkire moved that the General Manager be authorized to pre- pare a statement of the projected earnings of the plant and supply each member with a copy. This motion was seconded by Councilman Youngflesh, and on voice vote was carried. The committee allowed claims in the amount of 8279, 463. 16. The following transfer was made: The sum of `n100, 000. 00 from Sinking Fund Cash to Cash Operating Fund.
