HomeMy Public PortalAbout10-17-1949 238 MEETING OF THE COMMON COUNCIL, SERVING AS A COMMITTEE IN CHARGE OF THE OPERATION OF THE MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC LIGHTING AND POWER PLANT OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1949. The Common Council of the City of Richmond, Indiana, serving as a Committee in charge of the operation of the Municipal Electric Lighting and Power Plant, met in regular session in the office of the Board of Public Works and Safety, in the City Building in said City, Monday, October 17, 1949, at 8:30 o'clock P.M. , Councilman Chambers presiding with the following members being present: Messrs. Baldwin, Eastman, Harris, Law, Marino, Myers and Tracy. On motion duly made, seconded and carried unanimously, the minutes of the previous meeting were dispensed with. Mr. Donald Bell, Mr. B. J. Young and Mr. Phil Sexton, engineer for the Underwriters' Association, appeared before the Committee regarding the matter of appraisal on the Light Plant for insurance. Mr. Bell discussed the increase in the insurable valu- ation of the Light Plant buildings and urged that the premium be increased. He advised that a special appraisers' report would be completed and furnished the Committee within the next few weeks by the appraisal firm. Councilman Harris made a motion that the Committee order a binder for $626-,000.00 more insurance to run until this report is.completed formally and in the hands of the Committee, when it will be reviewed and final action taken. This motion was seconded by Councilman Eastman and was carried by the following vote: Ayes, Bald- win, Chambers, Law, Marino, Myers and Tracy. Hayes, None. The matter of the city power line being cut by .aircraft landing at the East Rich- mond Airport was brought before the Committee by Mr. Robert Winters, Manager of said Airport, and Mr . Ed. Rodefeld, owner of the property. Mr. Winters suggested that the high-tension.wires owned by the Light Plant be put underground to relieve such hazards and that the Committee consider some plan whereby the airport and city share the cost- of placing the wires underground. He stated that he was also inter- ested in the safety of those flying into and out of the airport. After much dis- cussion, it was suggested by Councilman Chambers that Mr. Beck consider the matter and make a report on same at a future meeting of the Committee. Mr. Beck advised that the Light Plant has 16,125 tons of coal on hand as of October 17, 1949, which represents approximately 66 days' supply, using an average of 244 tons per day. He stated that this amount of coal will carry the Plant until Xmas time, and that he was not so optimistic about the coal situation as he was two weeks ago, as things could get bad. Mr. Beck stated that the lamp contract must be renewed by November 1, 1949 and that Miller Bros. Company now have it for one year. Councilman Law moved that the con- tract with Miller Bros. be continued for one more year, seconded by Councilman Marino and carried unanimously. The Committee allowed claims in the amount of $60,836.94. On motion duly made, seconded and carried unanimously, the meeting adjourned. Chairman Attest: /i. i ►�311P ���,�� City C perk
