AASHTO rec ommends a 2 -foo t minimum or below prev ailing fro st de pth, whiche ver is gr eater f or retaining structures. These minimum r ecommend ed depths are based on rigid foundation systems and are not totally applicable to SRWs, which can functi on prop erly with significantly less embedment. The proper embedment depth is a function of the structure size and type, the underlying soils, and the site geometry, especially to e slo pes. It is impo rtant to properly inspect the foundation area when excavat ed, d etermine the limits of remo val and replacement of un suitable mate rials, and the n c onfirm the final embedm ent d epth for stability a nd bearing given th e sit e conditions. Fill slopes usually have poo r compaction near the edge of slo pe, and all slopes are subject to e rosio n and superficial instability (see Figure A :2, right).
