AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
STATEMENT OF POLICY
The City of Watertown strives to reflect diversity in all government activities, programs and services regardless of race, creed, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, age, disability, or veteran status. We embrace and celebrate our differences which enriches the quality of the work experience and enhances our own professional
relationships. will adhere to the provisions of all federal and state laws governing equal opportunity in employment, affirmative action, and non-discrimination in municipal services.
Such laws presently include, but are not limited to, Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 151B; Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended, Housing and Community Development
Act of 1974 as amended, Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 and Federal Executive Order 11246, as amended. In implementing this policy, the City intends to comply fully with
the letter and the spirit of the law.
The City will, without regard to circumstances of race, creed, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identify, age, disability, or veteran status:
Hire persons who are qualified to perform the defined duties and responsibilities of the position to be filled.
Provide all employees with the privileges and benefits associated with employment.
Promote and transfer employees on a non-discriminatory basis.
Provide all qualified employees with an equal opportunity to participate in applicable training and development programs.
Compensate all employees on the principle of equal pay for equal work.
Establish and/or maintain all employee facilities on a non-discriminatory basis.
The City will not limit, segregate, or classify its employees in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of opportunities, or adversely affect his or her status
as an employee because of such employee’s race, color, religion, sex, national origin or age.
Affirmative action requires more than vigilance in the elimination of discriminatory barriers. It must also entail positive and aggressive measures to ensure equal opportunity in
internal personnel practices and in those programs which can affect persons outside of city government. This affirmative action shall include efforts necessary to remedy the effects
of present and past discriminatory patterns and any action necessary to guarantee equal opportunity for all people.
