There is software that can account for seasonality, will need to ask Brad if this software is in place or not. Lisa will present the six-month energy data in November. Solid Waste – Frank Frank spoke with Chantel about trying to approach commercial businesses about cardboard recycling. Pratt Industry has offered an 8-yard container to collect cardboard for free and will empty it as often as necessary. Southern Paper is another possibility – if the container is filled at least 1.5 times/month. The City would not collect money from the cardboard; however, it would reduce the amount having to be hauled away. Ultimate goal to have containers at South Beach, North Beach and The Oaks. North Beach, Shriners, and the Lighthouse should be contacted. The container must be fenced. Residents would also be able to use the container. Cardboard prices fluctuate, currently $80-84/pound, down from ~$130. Arby’s, North Beach, and Chu’s are currently recycling cardboard. IGA has purchases a compactor and Mike Hosti sells the cardboard. Collecting cardboard has the benefits of not generating dust, noise or smell. Public works is looking at going to single-stream at least one location on South Beach. William at Wave’s is very interested in cardboard recycling. Cardboard comprises approx. 25% of the weight for recyclables, plus weight is added once is exposed to grease and other liquids. WastePro is allowing commercial customers to trade a trash container for an additional recycling container. Discussion ensued about trash collection can sizes and how other communities charge by the bag, not the container size. Composting is available at the community garden; they are working on compost pickup. Lisa wrote an article in The Tybee Breeze for November about composting. Jitterbug has a composter. 2014 Birding Festival – Shelly Shelly reported she continues to work on the NOAA Coastal Incentive Grant for a birding festival for Tybee Island. Shelly will work with Chantel to collect letters of support and to “save the date” with the Tybee Island Tourism Council. Green Team – Chantel Chris is the chairperson now.
