MINUTES FROM THE APRIL MEETING: Don made a motion to approve the April and June minutes. Trish seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. ANNOUNCEMENTS: N/A PRESENTATIONS: Dicky Trotter spoke about the upcoming International Nature and Environmental Exposition that will be in Tybee January 23-25th, 2013. The event will feature 200 artists, antique dealers and collectors, 65 local, regional and international environmental and conservation groups and will include seminars and nature tours. Five thousand to 10,000 people are expected to attend. Discussion ensued as to the level of involvement of the CRC. Mallory made a motion to continue the discussion to see how the CRC can assist; Frank seconded the motion. Motion passed. Will discuss at August meeting. TREASURER REPORT: - Don Don bought a safe box and is turning the $600 over to the new treasurer, to be appointed, since his term ends in September. GOALS REPORT: Send all updated “goals reports” to Shelly and she will incorporate them into the matrix COMMITTEE REPORTS: Beach Showers – Don Don’s term ends in September, he will still be able to help to drive the wells forward. He has been talking to Cardwell Smith and will help the new point person once he rolls off the CRC. A handout on UV was circulated, maintenance may be an issue. Don is on the agenda for this Thursday to see how to proceed. Must consider the risk between non-potable water, aquifer withdrawals and beachgoer satisfaction; not being able to rinse feet after beach is a huge issue for beachgoers. For ~ $1500, a footbath can be put in at North Beach. Would like to know where is the case law that prevents or allows non-potable water, because non-potable water is definitely used elsewhere legally. [Type text] Education Committee – Mallory Mallory distributed goals and vision and mission statement for the Ed committee. Mallory volunteered to write for the Tybee Breeze and other Savannah publications and would like a statement from each of the subcommittees, but he has not received any yet, would like information on past projects, successes, and upcoming projects and goals. Brainstorming ensured. Mallory has contacts with CONNECT, etc. Would like to schedule monthly meeting with the subcommittees to gather information. It would be great to have an article in the Tybee Breeze or CONNECT by September. Mallory talked to Diane and she will set up interviews with City employees, such as the Green Team. The top goals of the Ed committee are to educate and get the word out about sustainable technologies for Tybee Island. Sundi Marino asked Mallory to write an article for “Destination Tybee.” It is also very important that people are speaking at Council meetings and to keep pushing the mission and goals of the CRC; progress is occurring and we must keep raising awareness of the technologies available to forward the mission of the CRC. There was a discussion about how the CRC goals and Green Team goals overlapped. Articles about CRC subcommittees by Mallory: Chantel – Green Team -- Oct? Don – Nov Frank – solid waste -- Dec Brad and Judy – Jan Lisa – transportation – Feb/Apr Libby – green space -- March Shelly reported on a grant opportunity through the GA CRD Coastal Incentive Grants and the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service regarding creating of a Birding Festival for Tybee Island in the winter of 2014. CRC expressed strong support to continue looking into the possibilities for this to go forward. There are other entities on Tybee that would likely write letters of support, including Ocean Plaza. The Georgia Ornithological Society already has its annual meeting in January. The Tybee Island special events coordinator could be the liaison to market and publicize the event. It may be feasible for the CRC to bring together Mallory, who has a lot of experience with birding and leading birding tours, the City and the special events coordinator. Chantel will get this on the agenda for the next Green Team meeting. Paul and Shelly will meet to discuss ideas and coordinate, and meet with Dr. Randall Walker, the director of the UGA Marine Extension Service. Energy – Brad Brad prepared a document that he will circulate to the CRC to support Dr. Smith for a 100kW system at North Beach. All power generated must be consumed on site. Dr. Smith is handling the mechanism with Georgia Power and other relevant utilities. Don made a motion that the CRC support Dr. Smith. Shelly seconded the motion. Motion passed. Freda will circulate a letter of support. The energy monitoring is completed and the system at the library and City will soon be on the City website and at City Hall on a monitor, quantifying the energy savings. The website should draw comparisons for the energy saving before the improvements. Solid Waste – Frank It pays $120-$175/ton for paper (cardboard). Having a compactor and a way to collect the cardboard is a need. Frank has contacted Prett Industries and they are willing to work with [Type text] Tybee Island. Need to discuss options to cardboard collection and prepare a PowerPoint to show at Council meeting and have list of businesses that support it. Mike Hosti at Tybee Market IGA is already compacting his own cardboard and it a big proponent. Arby’s also collects their cardboard for compacting, which is located on City property. A used bailer that compacts the cardboard is approximately $5,000 and up, with new ones around $10,000. Paper combined with other recyclables absorbs a lot of water and food oils and adds to the cost of compacting; removing the paper from the recycling stream will also save money on that end as well. Would be receiving money from the cardboard instead of paying to have it removed from the island with the other recyclables. Collecting cardboard has the benefits of not generating dust, noise or smell. Frank and Shelly will contact local businesses to identify what the business community wants and to generate support. Food security – Shelly Shelly reported she will be setting up a small chicken coop for five egg-laying hens soon and will update the CRC frequently on how it proceeds. Green Team – Chantel Chantel will update the CRC at the next month’s meeting. ACTION ITEMS  Freda will identify who is rolling off the CRC  Freda will circulate the prepared letter for CRC to support Dr. Sydney Smith  Need to discuss level of CRC involvement with the 2013 International Nature and Environmental Exposition  People can send their “Goals Updates” to Shelly to compile  Frank and Shelly will meet to contact retailers and restaurants to query collecting cardboard for recycling  CRC should have a standing agenda to be on the schedule for all Council meetings, even if we do not present, because of the lag between wanting to be on the agenda and the ability to get on the agenda in time  Mallory would like a statement from each of the subcommittees as he prepares an introductory column about the CRC  Goal: disseminate energy savings to Council, etc. – Brad and David Grey are putting a monitor in the lobby of City Hall in real time and will report out to Council NEW BUSINESS: OLD BUSINESS: ADJOURN: Frank made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:47 pm. Freda seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously slk
