OPPOSING SENATE BILL S -1261
WHEREAS, Senate Bill S -1261, released by the Senate and General Assembly of the
State of New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, S -1261, establishes a number of fire safety standards for light frame
construction of new multiple dwellings, hotels, and rooming houses with more than two
dwelling or sleeping units ; and
WHEREAS, S -1261 in its current form would stifle urban revitalization and effectively
cripple the State's ability to provide affordable housing; New Jersey has implemented
building codes that have dramatically increased safety and significantly reduced the
number of fires over the past thirty years; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the Borough
of Carteret, County of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, as follows:
1. That the Borough of Carteret hereby opposes Senate Bill S -1261 and
the protocols for residential construction in Bill S 1261 which attempts
to impose burdensome and unreasonable fire safety regulations on any
residential construction of three or more units and will negatively
impact the State's ability to provide housing for our most vulnerable
population and add to New Jersey's unaffordability.
2. That a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the New Jersey League
of Municipalities, Senator Paul A. Sarlo, Senator Brian P. Stack,
Senator Joseph Vitale, Assemblyman Craig Coughlin and
Congressman Frank Pallone.
Adopted this 6 day of December, 2018
