Dear Watertown Resident,
As the Watertown Police Department moves toward community policing, it is important
to have citizen -police interaction and cooperation. One way to accomplish this goal is
through an exchange of ideas and education.
The Watertown Police Department's Citizens Police Academy (CPA) program is an
excellent means to achieve this end. The CPA is designed to acquaint the public with
the operations of the police department. It is our intention that after completion of this
ten week program, participants will have a better understanding of the police officer's
role in the criminal justice system and an appreciation of the many challenges facing
law enforcement in today's society.
The course is structured to provide as much information as possible in enjoyable and
interesting ways. There is No Fee. We only require that participants come each week
prepared to be involved in discussion and demonstrations.
The CPA will include information on such topics as law, patrol operations, deadly force,
arrest procedures, accident and criminal investigation, drugs, crime prevention,
community policing and much more.
The Citizen Police Academy will begin on Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 and run
for ten consecutive weeks from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
I invite you to apply and be a part of this cooperative effort between the police and the
community. Please fill out the enclosed application and return it no later than Friday,
September 13, 2019. Seating is limited and applicants are accepted on a first come,
first serve basis.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
'??Z"ad P, da w

Sincerely,

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CONDUCTING A CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY?
To give the public a working knowledge of the Watertown Police
Department policies and procedures through a series of classes instructed by
Watertown Police Department Personnel.
IN WHAT WAYS WILL THE CPA IMPROVE POLICE COMMUNITY
RELATIONS?
The more information the public has about their police department, the less
suspicion, fear and misconceptions will exist. Many conflicts are caused simply by
a lack of understanding and these could be avoided. The motto of the Citizen
Police Academy is "Understanding through Education"
HOW IS THE CLASS CONDUCTED?
Participants meet once per week for ten consecutive weeks. The sessions
will be held at the Watertown Police Department located at 552 Main St.
Instruction is designed to be appealing to participants with lectures, tours,
demonstrations and hands on practice.
WHAT TYPE OF MATERIAL IS COVERED?
The sessions are designed to give an overview of the Watertown Police
Department and its various functions; from hiring practices to training and
investigation.
HOW WILL THE INFORMATION OBTAINED IN THIS COURSE BE USED
BY THE PUBLIC?
We believe that an informed public is better able to make decisions about
the Watertown Police Department. We hope this program will assist us in
breaking down any barriers between our officers and the people they serve.
