We are pleased to announce that Cindy Thatcher has joined our COA Outreach Team to advocate for and provide our seniors with social services resources. Some of you might remember Cindy from the past, as she was our Elder Services Nutrition Rep for the Meals on Wheels Program, as well as Senior Dining. She has been work- ing at Elder Services for 17 years and she brings a lot of knowledge to our COA Team. Stop in to meet her the next time you are in the building. Good-bye to Regina Egan It is a bittersweet time for all of us as Regina has decided to retire. After 6 ½ years of managing “Command Central”, we will [certainly miss her laughter and smile at the Front Desk. We wish her the best while she and her husband Charlie enjoy their new [adventures Thank You to the Friends of Brewster Elders Our kitchen refrigerator was showing its age, so we decided to purchase a new one. Therefore, we are shouting out a ‘BIG THANK YOU” to the Friends group for purchasing it for our Senior Center. Do You Need a Ride to the Elections? Want to go and vote in person for the State Elections on Tuesday, November 8? If so, please call the COA at 508-896-2737 to schedule a ride. Also, we will provide rides to and/or from Town Meeting on Monday, November 14 which begins at 6:00pm. Please call us by noon on Wednesday, November 9th. Rides are available during the entirety of Town Meeting. Set Your Clocks Back Turns out you CAN turn back time! Daylight Saving time ends on Sunday, November 6. Remember to set your clocks back one hour and check the batteries in your smoke detectors too! Finally… After 2 ½ years of a modified schedule, the Brewster COA is back to being open to the public 5 days per week from 8:00am- 4:00pm. Stop by during our work hours to say ‘Hi!’ and check out all the great things we’ve got going on! Holiday Gifting & Events 1. “Homeless for the Holidays” Brewster Fire Department at Our Lady of the Cape Chapel parking lot, 2580 Main St. (Route 6A) December 7 – 11. They will be collecting unwrapped toys for all ages as well as non- perishable foods to be donated to the Family Pantry, and monetary donations for the Lower Cape Outreach Council. 2. “Toys for Tots” Brewster Fire Dept., 1671 Main St. Beginning in November They will also be collecting new, unwrapped toys in the lobby of the Brewster Fire Station. 3. “Holiday Gifting” Brewster Recreation Dept. Adopt-a-Family program with the Homeless Prevention Council. For more information on how to participate in this holiday gifting, please call Mike Gradone at 508-896-9430. 4. “Brewster for the Holidays” will be held December 2-4. Here’s what’s coming up in November and December: Medicare Overview and Open Enrollment Presentation Tuesday, November 1 1:00 – 2:00pm FREE Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period is happening right now - October 15 to December 7. Join Bill Redmond, SHINE Program Manager, for a presentation on Medicare and open enrollment. Plans change every year so it’s important to stay up to date; a re- view of your plans could save you money! Meditation Class Thursdays, beginning November 3 10:00 – 11:00am In person meditation is back! Join Carol Marcy, certified meditation teacher for an in person meditation class (which will also continue to be offered online). The meditations are for both beginner and expe- rienced practitioners. Through the use of deep breathing techniques and nature based imagery, we invite an inner awareness. This heart -centered practice focuses on the immense benefits of grounding and balancing the flow of energy through the body. It brings health and wellbeing to all the systems of the body, as well as a deep sense of calmness and peace. Please wear loose clothing and bring a meditation pillow if you prefer to sit on the floor. Slow easy movement meditations may be included if it works for the group. Lose the Dinty Moore and come join Dave of Therapy Gardens and learn how to make a variety of chilis and stews. Hip Hop Dance Chair Exercise Class Friday, November 4 1:30 – 2:30pm FREE Postponed from October, join Rondae Drafts, Ph.D. abd, and Exec- utive Director of MusicDance for a 1 hour chair dance class. Travel through time on the “Soul Train” using clean-cut hip hop and rhythm and blues songs. Creative props, drums and African maracas will be utilized during the class to make this journey of dance come to life. Survival Spanish for Beginners Mondays, November 7 – December 12 9:30 – 11:00am $60 for 6 week series, includes phrase book and handouts Hola Amigos! Have you always wanted to learn another language? This is your opportunity to learn basic survival Spanish, the lan- guage spoken by 400 million people around the world. The instruc- tor has over 30 years as a Spanish professor and loves to share her enthusiasm for the language and culture. You will learn pronuncia- tion and how to form questions and statements on everyday topics such as greetings, food, family, travel, health, hobbies and shop- ping. Consumer Scams and Your Rights Wednesday, November 9 1:00 – 2:00pm FREE Scams are becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives. This presentation by Attorney Andrew Bardetti of South Coastal Counties Legal Services (SCCLS) will cover some popular scams and discuss steps you can take to protect yourself. Collage and Mixed Media Art Thursdays: November 10 - December 15 9:30 - 11:00am (No class Thanksgiving) $90 for 5-week series The creative process is a wonderful way of freeing up the mind and getting to the heart and soul of the matter. It’s like going on an adventure. Jennifer Stratton will facilitate you on this five week journey using collage and mixed media projects as a vehicle to let your inner artist out. Each week Jennifer will provide some historical and contemporary context and tech- niques in relation to this art form. Wild Care Talk on Snowy Owls Wednesday, November 16 1:00 – 2:00pm FREE Please join us for a presentation with Stephanie Ellis, Executive Director of Wild Care, a wildlife rehabilitation hospital located on Cape Cod, in Eastham, MA. Stephanie will discuss the journey of Snowy Owls from the Arctic to the shores of Cape Cod and how our Cape community can contribute to the safety and survival of these incredible creatures. Page 4 Stepping Stones to Fitness 6 week program: Fridays, 11:00am – 12:00pm December 2 – January 6 FREE An exercise program designed to keep you active through the winter! This free progressive exercise program teaches participants basic home exercises to improve strength and endurance, keeping you independent and confident to exercise! Participants must be able to safely ambulate, though a low tolerance to walking/standing is acceptable. Home exercise programs can be done with or without the use of equipment. Instructed by Nikki Courtney, Exercise Physi- ologist with the VNA of Cape Cod. Classes will be held at the COA but advanced registration - including medical clearance - is required. Join experi- enced Art Educator Pamela Quirinale for three fun sessions. Pamela designed this drawing program for parents and grandpar- ents to do at home, with their families, and for those on any kind of budget. In each lesson, you will learn how to draw 3 different subjects with simply a pencil, eraser, and white paper. Each instruction page has 2 sections; one for adults and teens, and the other for young children – enabling you to share this project at home with kids and grandkids. Make Your Own Holiday Spice Mix Monday, December 5 11:00am – 12:00pm Spices have a special power to evoke memories of time with friends and family. Whether it’s the aroma of Thanksgiving stuffing or a warm glass of spiced cider, nothing compares to the scents and flavors of the holiday season. Come join Dave of Therapy Gardens and learn how to make pumpkin spice, mulling spices for wine or cider, and other holiday spice blends. Participants will leave with their own blend of a holiday spice mixture, along with recipes for other mixtures. Everyone gets 1 custom spice packet. Trip Friday evening, December 9 4:30pm Cost: $17 per ticket, only 2 tickets per person allowed Gardens Aglow at Heritage Museums and Gardens is a celebration of lights that has become a treasured holiday tradition. This event features beautiful light displays throughout the gardens, festive sea- sonal décor, and fun activities for all. Gardens Aglow is ADA accessible, with complimentary transportation however please note, an able-bodied assistant must attend as well, as staff will not be available for assistance with mobility issues. In addition to being a RN, she is also a Certified Foot Care Nurse/Specialist. Usually occurring on the first Friday of each month, 20-minute appointments are available from 9am to 2:30pm with a fee of $40.00. Call the COA to schedule your appointment at 508-896-2737. Blood Pressure and Glucose Testing 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month: November 14 and 28 & December 12 (26 is a Town holiday) 10:00 - 11:00am First come, first served The Barnstable County Public Health Nursing program provides services here at the COA on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Senior Tax Work-Off Program The Senior Real Estate Tax Abatement Program matches municipal volunteer opportunities in the Town of Brew- ster with eligible senior citizens who are qualified and able to volunteer their services in exchange for a reduction in their real es- tate tax bill. In exchange for 67 hours of vol- unteer service, the Town will abate the an- nual real estate property tax by $1000.* (*less mandatory deductions), OR in ex- change for 33.5 hours of volunteer service, the Town will abate the annual real estate property tax by $500.* (*less mandatory de- ductions). You need to complete the volun- teer hours by September 1, 2023. Are you eligible? You are a Town of Brewster Taxpayer who is age sixty (60) or older You are a homeowner and occupant as of July 1st of the prior calendar year for the property that the abatement is requested. The Open Enrollment Period (Oct 15th – Dec 7th) for Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) and Prescription Drug Plans (Part D) is under way and it is very important to re-evaluate your Medicare options for 2023 during this period. Each year Medicare plans can change premiums, deductibles, co-pays and the prescrip- tion formulary (list of drugs they cover). In addition, Medicare Advantage Plans (HMOs, PPOs) often add and/or drop primary and specialty physicians, skilled nursing facilities and hospitals. Your current plan is required to notify you by September 30th of any changes for the coming year. You should have received this letter and read through it. It does contain the premium for 2023. Some people did not read their letter for 2022 and did not realize, until too late, their premiums doubled. If you decide to keep your current plan, no further action is required. Changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) Plan during the Open Enrollment Period take effect January 1, 2023. (Please note - this enrollment period may not affect you if you have retiree coverage through a former job). SHINE appointments fill up quickly so don’t forget to call your senior center as soon as possible (Brewster COA: 508-896-2737). The Regional SHINE office is also available to help. If you would like the Regional SHINE office to assist you, please call 508-375-6762 for a telephone appointment. You may also contact Medicare directly at 1-800-633-4227. They are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. This may also be the time of year when you have hit the gap, formerly the “donut hole”, and your medication costs have jumped. Fortunately, there are programs that may be able to assist with these costs. Please call the Regional SHINE office or talk with the SHINE counselor at your local Senior Center to learn about these assistance programs. Remember- don’t wait until it is too late. If you don’t change your Part D plan during the Open Enrollment Period (Oct 15th- Dec 7th), your 2022 plan will be your 2023 plan. Let SHINE help you navigate through the 2023 plan changes. November and December seem to roll around more quickly each year, leaving less and less time to get ready for the many holidays that span the last two months of the year. If you’re still into decorating and hosting on any scale, it takes plenty of planning and plenty of time. Savor and stretch out the work and you’ll enjoy it more. Generally people (relatives and friends) are kinder and gentler when shared memories are recalled over a nice dinner. All by yourself? There are many organizations that provide a nice dinner and companionship during the holiday season. Once their schedules are announced, we hope to include them in the up- coming newsletters. Meanwhile, December is shaping up to be a fun-filled month for members of the Friends of Brewster Elders. On Sunday, December 4th, we’ll be heading down to Hyannis to enjoy seasonal entertain- ment provided by the Cape Symphony for the 1 PM seating. For those who can’t or don’t want to drive, we will be providing transpor- tation to the traditional Symphony Holiday on the Cape event, which is routinely sold out. Special guests this year include ViVA Trio, an award-winning all-female vocal group that takes their own classical- to-pop crossover approach to freshen up holiday favorites. The Cape Symphony Dance Company will perform classic scenes from The Nutcracker and the Chatham Chorale rounds out the program. As always, it should be a wonderful afternoon. We are so grateful to the new management team at Brewster Green for allowing our seniors to participate in Senior Swim every Friday from 10:00am to 12:00noon.There is a fee of $1.00 per swim, payable to the COA and collected through an honor system (stop by once a month to pay). To be eligible to swim, you must be 60+ and come to the Senior Center to register, sign a waiver and regulation form. You will receive a list of the resort’s rules at that time. It is very important that all participants adhere to Brewster Green’s rules to make it a positive experience for all. In addition, the resort reserves the right to cancel Senior Swim during holiday periods when their paying guests are in town, such as Thanksgiving Week, Christmas Week and New Year’s Week, and other holiday weeks as needed. The Holidays sent me to the ER- (Risk of holiday overindulgence/CHF) Many of us look forward to the holiday season - opportunity to travel, time together with loved ones, and the big holiday feast. Research suggests increased cardiac morbidity and heart failure exacerbations during winter months, with a peak around the holiday season. All too often we get out of our routines of regular exercise, portioned meals, and timely medication administration and it costs us in the long run. Gluttony with excessive ingestion of high caloric and heavily sodium -filled foods takes precedence over diet compliance and self- management of chronic cardiac conditions. In addition to dietary slip ups, the holidays tend to be a time of high stress. This combination can lead to a congestive heart failure epi- sode, which generally requires hospitalization for proper management of. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic, progressive condi- tion in which the heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs for blood and oxygen. Basically, the heart can't keep up with its workload. Excessive eating and drinking holiday goodies increases heart rate and blood pressure and forces your heart to work harder. A strained heart increases incidence of arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), heart attack, and congestive heart failure. Signs that your heart isn’t working as it should include: progressive shortness of breath, swelling of the lower extremities and increases in body weight. The holidays don’t have to end for those with cardiac conditions; they can still be enjoyable times if some mindful actions are put into place before the big day. Take proactive actions such as talking openly to those you share the holidays with about the importance of maintenance of routine and not over-indulging because of the danger it can have. Other conditions to remain healthy through the holidays include getting regular exercise, staying properly hydrated, taking prescribed medications, drinking alcohol in moderation, and being selective with the intake of salty and sugary foods. At the National Cemetery are Hospital Corpsman Richard DeWert, USNR (1931- 1951) killed during the Korean War while attached to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines and SFC Jared C. Monti, United States Army, killed in Afghanistan June 21, 2006. Benjamin Franklin Baker, March 12, 1858 - May 19, 1927,is the only Medal of Honor recipient from Cape Cod, born and raised in Dennis Port. He joined the Unit- ed States Navy in 1885 and served as a Coxswain aboard the USS Nashville during the Spanish-American War. On May 11, 1898, Baker and 13 other volunteers went over the side of the USS Nashville, climbed into several small open boats and paddled quietly into Cien- fuegos Harbor, Cuba, where several U.S. Battleships , including the USS Massachusetts, were participating in a blockade of the Spanish fleet. The mission was to find and cut the Trans-Atlantic telegraph cables that linked the Spanish commanders in Cuba with Spain. Baker and his fellow sailors cut two large cables. His CMOH Citation reads, “On board the U.S.S. Nashville during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, May 11, 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Baker set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.” Should you visit Coxswain Baker’s gravesite at the Swan Lake Cemetery, bring along some pennies to lay on the gravestone to show your respect in that you have visited. Military tradition on coins on veteran’s gravestones is as follows: “A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respect. A penny means you visited; A nickel means you and the deceased veteran trained at boot camp together; A dime means you and the deceased veteran served together in some capaci- ty; A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that veteran died.” If you look closely at the photo above you will see a shiny penny at the top of the gravestone. MEDICAL & DENTAL APPOINTMENTS - Volunteer drivers are available for transport to routine medical appointments in their personal cars. We travel as far as Hyannis and regret we cannot accommodate patients having procedures. Please call the COA at 508-896-2737 as soon as you make an appointment or at least 4 business days (Monday thru Friday: weekends do not count) in ad- vance so that we can schedule your ride. This service is available to all Cape Cod residents and is available Monday through Saturday in all towns, with limited Sunday service. Rides must be scheduled by no later than noon on the day prior to a ride. Rides can be scheduled up to 30 days in advance. The DART does not run on holidays.
