HomeMy Public PortalAbout2023-04-11 Item 1d WHEREAS, Armenian Remembrance Day is a national holiday in Armenia and is observed by Armenians in dispersed communities around the world; and WHEREAS, April 24th remembers the start of the Armenian genocide in which Armenian notables deported from the Ottoman capital and ultimately executed; and WHEREAS, Armenian Remembrance Day is held annually to commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide from 1915-1923 in which the Ottoman Empire sought to systematically destroy the Armenian culture and people, resulting in the loss of 1.5 million Armenian lives; and WHEREAS, as we remember the victims and survivors of the Armenian Genocide, we also honor the strength and resilience of the Armenian people. Forced to build new lives, Armenians bravely forged ahead in the face of unimaginable tragedy; and WHEREAS, on this solemn day of remembrance we recall the darkness of the past and look ahead to a brighter future for the people of Armenia and reaffirm our commitment to preventing future atrocities from being committed against any people; and WHEREAS, this day is an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Armenian people, their contributions to the arts, sciences, humanities, and their enduring legacy of resilience and survival.
