HomeMy Public PortalAbout2023-04-11 Item 1bWHEREAS, Dolores Huerta was born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico. She was exposed to the hardships that her community faced at a young age, but was greatly inspired by her mother’s work as a community activist; and WHEREAS, Huerta was taught by her family to give back to her community and be a voice and advocate for the working people of California. Huerta’s own experiences of discrimination and her innate sense of justice led her to become a prominent Hispanic activist; and WHEREAS, she went on to join fellow activist, Cesar Chavez and together they founded the United Farm Workers Association. Huerta was vital in organizing workers, negotiating contracts, and advocating for safer working conditions. She also fought for unemployment and healthcare benefits; and WHEREAS, Huerta continues to work tirelessly to empower marginalized communities, through her advocacy work, political activism, and philanthropy, including establishing the Dolores Huerta Foundation to promote community organizing and leadership development; and WHEREAS, Huerta was the recipient of many awards including the Elanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1988 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012; and WHEREAS, We recognize the profound impact Dolores Huerta has made on countless Americans and her lifelong commitment to justice for all and the many trails she paved for generations of activists.
