HomeMy Public PortalAbout2023-04-11 Item 1e WHEREAS, Arab American Heritage Month is celebrated annually in the month of April to recognize the past and present achievements of Arab Americans and recognize their contributions to our nation. This celebration has been observed since the 1990’s until 2021, where it was federally recognized as a national initiative; and WHEREAS, while the celebration of Arab American Heritage Month is recent, the history dates back as far as 1527, when Estebanico Azemmouri, and Antonio Bishallany, residents of Morroco and Lebanon, would settle in what would later become the U.S, becoming the first members of the Arab American Community that is approximately 3.7 million people today; and WHEREAS, this month is an opportunity to promote understanding, respect, and dialogue among people of different cultures and backgrounds and to combat prejudice, discrimination, and xenophobia through awareness; and WHEREAS, Arab Americans have faced many challenges of discrimination, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, and as a result, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to promote tolerance, inclusion, and social justice for all; and WHEREAS, the Arab American community has made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our nation and as well as their rich history and diverse heritage play an integral part of our shared heritage; and WHEREAS, this is the time to uplift our communities and bring a discussion to dismantle and deconstruct hate speech and xenophobia towards impacted and vulnerable community groups. NOW, THEREFORE WE, the members of the Millbrae City Council, do hereby proclaim APRIL 2023 AS ARAB AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH ________________________________________ Ann Schneider, Mayor ________________________________________ Maurice Goodman, Vice Mayor ________________________________________ Anders Fung, Councilmember ________________________________________ Angelina Cahalan, Councilmember ________________________________________ Gina Papan, Councilmember April 11, 2023
