AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING THE
SALARY OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND AMENDING
i THE CARSON MUNICIPAL CODE

WHEREAS, the City Council desires to amend the Carson Municipal Code
relating to the compensation paid to persons elected to serve the people of
Carson as City Councilmembers; and E`
WHEREAS, the Carson Governance Committee considered over the
period of several months whether compensation for the Mayor and
Councilmembers is adequate, and determined that increases in compensation
are appropriate; and s

WHEREAS, this ordinance shall not take effect until after the next t
municipal election, as provided in California Government Code section 36516; '

WHEREAS, the City Council held a duly noticed public meeting to j
consider the proposed amendment and took public comments relating to same;
and
WHEREAS, all legal prerequisites to the adoption of this Ordinance have
occurred. x
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON
DOES HEREBY ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. The Carson Municipal Code is hereby amended by deleting
the existing language of Section 2301 of Article II, Chapter 3, relating to City
Council compensation, and replacing it with the following language, which shall
read, in its entirety, as follows:
"§2301
"Pursuant to Section 36516 of the Government Code of the State of
California, each member of the City Council shall receive as salary
I the sum of $1,722.38 per month. Such salaries shall be payable at
the same time and in the same manner as salaries are paid to other
officers and employees of the City."
Section 2. The Office of the California Attorney General recently issued its
opinion on the amount of compensation that may be paid to the Mayor and Members of
the City Council (Opinion 06-504). The Attorney General has opined that compensation
for members of the City Council may be increased five percent (5%) for each year since
the time of the last increase. The increase is a simple, non-compounded calculation.
Section 3. This ordinance shall take effect April 1, 2007, or upon the certification

of election results after the March 2007 municipal election, whichever occurs later.
Section 4. Until the date this ordinance takes effect, each member of the City
Council shall receive as salary the sum of$1,148.25 per month.
Section 5. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Ordinance, and shall
cause the same to be posted and published in the manner required by law.
