The police department is one of several agencies attempting to advance the quality of service provided to the community. In doing so, the department wishes to upgrade computer equipment issued to officers in their patrol unit. Currently staffed with 30 officers, only a portion of them have laptops. The laptops currently in use are beginning to show signs of wear and are costly to repair. In an effort to improve the services they provide, the department wishes to replace the aging laptops for the patrol unit. New laptops will enable officers to work more efficiently from their patrol cars and establish wireless access to various databases. Program Description Key Biscayne will be able to better serve their residents by replacing the worn computer laptops. It will enable officers to remain in their patrol vehicles while writing and transmitting reports, as opposed to returning to the station for this task. This is tum provides more efficient reporting by staff and facilitates the mainstreaming of shared data department -wide. Additionally, the new equipment will provide access to NCIC/FCIC and other criminal justice data bases from the field, without having to call the dispatcher. In the upcoming grant year, the department will use JAG funds to purchase laptops for four officers in the patrol unit. Additional program funds were provided to Key Biscayne due to a reallocation of grant dollars. These new funds will be used to upgrade backup software for the police department's new servers.
